ALDI - like Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons

We have been aldi fans for a few years, but I find more and more of what we buy is available there as they add new lines so I agree we must be able to get well over 90% of our shop from there. I got to 2 local farm shops for most of the rest, but some baking items I still need to go to the supermarkets and I also take advantage of any good offers (although they seem to have been thin on the ground this year).

Compare that to a typical experience in Tesco, Sainsburys or Asda, where I sometimes wonder how the cashier can be so slow and still be in the job.The one thing I love about aldi above all the savings, specials and unusual products is how quick the till is. Even on quiet days our local morrisons takes a lot longer and tesco you might as well pull up a chair!
I work for Morrisons and have worked on the checkouts quite a few times in my years there, so I will stick up for the 'slow staff' on this one - we are actually told to go at a steady pace, chat to each customer etc to provide a nice shopping experience for each indvidual. It's all part of this 'HOT Service' protocol they've brought in. Must admit though, it's not a hit with a lot of the customers, who like myself would rather just get in, do the shopping and get out, not make friends with the till girl and spend 10 mins there everytime I want to pay for something!0 -

Less check-outs I agree, but they are very quick - I believe they are targeted (I believe 30 items per minute is a possibility).
If only the big 4 had such efficient staff. Been in Morries and Sainsbury's the last few days and the doddery staff have taken ages to put through items. Still lack of staffed tills also, thank God for the self service tills at times.
The stafff at the big 4 (most anyway) couldn't and wouldn't survive at Lidl and Aldi.
I find once the queues build up to 5 or 6, they sharp put another operator on another till - maybe I just have a great Lidl??

The other interesting thing is I have never noticed another "indigenous" English person in my local Lidl - it's a highly ethnic area and even the caucasians seem to speak limited English. Maybe immigrants know a thing or two about moneysaving?Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Are you kidding? I absolutely hate to go to ASDA for stuff I only get there. It takes me so long every time at the till. As others wrote, in Lidl they open a new till as soon as there are more than 3 or 4 people queuing and the staff at the till is quicker too.
Maybe it also helps speeding up the process for everyone that you usually pack your bags after you paid in the designated area...0 -
I don't have an Aldi near but I do have a Lidl. I do an alternate week online shop of Tesco and Asda, and once a week I take a bus to Lidl. I love Lidl not just because of price and efficiency of staff but because of quality and of products and varients of products I cannot find in Tesco or Asda. Lidl is true quality, freshness and variety.0

Its better to pack at your own speed as opposed to asda/tesco etc where your kind of being rushed. The only problem you get is with the inconsiderate people that like to pack their bags at the till and not at the area provided.
You should try explaining this was the thing not to do. I used to get funny odd looks like id spoken to them in another language but they eventually did it the way it was meant to be done although with a few huffs and puffs.0 -
I was in Lidl the other week. An older lady was in front of me and she had quite a bit of shopping, some of it quite heavy. The CO immediately buzzed for someone to come help her pack and take it out to the car for her.
Don't think you would get that service in Tesco0
