    It is very unfortunate that it happened, but "nearly lost an eye" means "didn't lose an eye".

    PE will clearly not accept any liability, they would be stupid to do so (and their insurers would not cover them if they did, I'm sure!). This means you can either try to demonstrate liability in court, negotiate a higher 'goodwill' payment, or take the offer.

    Personally I'd probably negotiate and see what they offer next time (£75 instead of £50, maybe? Or the actual price of the meal you had but couldn't complete?)

    I'm a bit unclear as to how the sister "nearly lost an eye" Perhaps the hospital told her she might lose an eye rather than just said "We'll remove the glass splinter"

    i think it's because they had to call one of the waiting staff over. So they probably tried to remove it with salad tongs and they got an eye full of mayo.
