Servicing outside of dealer network?

£149 is about the same price as my local independant garage charges for a service with non-genuine parts. I can actually get a generic service from my Ford dealer for my Mondeo for £99!
BE AWARE THOUGH that a non-dealer won't be able to apply any ECU software updates or recall repairs that the manufacturer has released typically done at service time. Not a problem once your car is around 4 or 5 years old but I'd want the ECU updates in the first couple of years at least and there WILL be updates. You can book it in to get these updates done but they'll then charge for it.0 -
I really cannot understand why people would pay several thousand pounds for a new car and then use a back street garage to save a few pounds on servicing."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I have a MY2010 Kia Picanto, first registered 02/03/11 - first service due soon.
Dealer service prices are excessive IMO:
£149 10,000 miles
£260 20,000 miles
£149 30,000 miles
£300 40,000 miles
Am I right in thinking that all I need to do to keep my warranty is have it serviced to schedule by a VAT registered garage using genuine parts?
use the dealer network there are software updates for the ECU, i was at a kia dealer not so long ago with my father, they were updating all the forecourts picanto's new picanto's and cee'ds with the mobile lappy top (a toughbook). not to mention corrosion warranty, get that stamped too.0 -
£149/260 excessive for servicing on a new car?
It's not going to save much (if anything) getting a generic service done to the proper standards to keep the warranty intact (IIRC Kia like most car manufacturers expect the paint inspection to be done with the service to their standard for the anti corrosion warranty).
It amazes me that people will buy a new car, then quibble over a few pounds (or even tens of pounds) on servicing it properly for at least the fist few years, given that those are the years when any factory/manufacturing issues are most likely to show up to an engineer trained in the vehicle, not to mention the ECU updates etc.0 -

Isn't your car on a PCP type thing? Does that have any requirements that you need to follow?
I agree with the other posters, how is £149 excessive for a service? Just what kind of price were you expecting?0 -
Since when was £150 reasonable for a splash of oil and a filter?0

You're not just paying for the oil and filter. You're paying for the mechanics time, the building, building and insurances, VAT, taxes, NI, electricity, gas, levels of managers, spangly plate glass, potted plants, weak filter coffee etc. Everything has risen considerably in price so £150 for a main stealer service is OK. In addition to the simple oil and filter change the workshop should be inspecting the car for items on the checklist and if there are software updates then these will be applied.
I realise that you could go to VAT registered garage, use equivalent parts, and maintain the manufacturers warranty, but part of the 7 year warranty could be a dealer warranty under which different terms and conditions might apply irrespective of any EU directive. The man without a signature.0
