The chuffing cooker door has broken - 6 days before Christmas !!

So, whilst being wiped over today, the door to my gas cooker's main (larger) oven has broken, the 'cleats' which hold the inner glass in place have broken off.

Which is all very well, but we have a 13lb turkey to cook on Sunday.

I had looked on the indesit website (thought my cooker was a hotpoint, but googling reveals that it is really an indesit), couldn't see the parts I needed.

Rang the 'helpline' where a very unhelpful, and frankly rude man told me that the model number wouldn't do, he needed the commercial number of my cooker. I've never heard of a 'commercial number' before, and couldn't find such a thing. Eventually on a VERY small sticker right at the bottom of the front edge of the oven I found a serial number. He said he didn't want a serial number, but when I read it out it seemed to be the right format, apparently (I thought I was going to have to take the kitchen apart to read the back of the cooker).

He says that he is sending out the parts I need by special delivery, to arrive tomorrow. He has taken my credit card number to charge me £32 for the privilege. I've now convinced myself that when it arrives, It won't be the right part, he is just sending something to get me off the phone (yes, I can be quite a pessimist)

I'm feeling so stressed tonight. Why do I always feel Christmas HAS to be perfect, and why does no-one else invite us to theirs to give me a break ??
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

    Aww.....*hugs*
Do you have a repair service shop that you could ask to look at the oven?

We all do it, I'm sure. Everything has to be perfect for one day!

If you haven't got a working oven, and nobody offers to help you out, well then they can have beans on toast for Christmas dinner and like it!

Fingers crossed you get it sorted though.

Oh dear. Well working things logically -always easier to do when it's not you involved. Who are you cooking for ie how many and what other cooking facilities do you have eg microwave, mini oven, hob still working?

My Christmas stress is my nan who is convinced she has ESP, that my mum was kidnapped this afternoon and many other strange things. So I'll have a think about a broken oven door instead just in case your parts aren't the right ones.

Me too - the heating element has blown on ours. Fortunately we're not here on Xmas Day so no turkey to worry about.

    Bliming annoying though.

My Mam's cooker door was broken for ages when I was little. She had a big blob of plasticine on the catch and stood a heavy dining chair in front of it to hold the door shut when she wanted to use the oven. Might be a solution to get you over Christmas :D

Ours is, ours is, ours is! :D
Sorry, I am hideously over excited at the thought that I don't have to cook and could host lunch for 12 there instead. The inlaws will be fine with it. ;)
  • My oven door shattered some months ago and we can't find a replacement! But there's an inner glass door and it still cooks ok so I'm still planning on cooking Christmas dinner for 10!

I keep asking santa (my OH) for us to share our Christmas gifts in the shape of a new oven, but unless I get one as a surprise in the next couple of days, then I'll get one for myself in the new year!

Ah it's not quite that simple I'm afraid.

Blimey, your kitchen must get hot, half the heat will be coming out of the oven with only one layer of glass !! - not to mention the danger of accidentally touching the glass.

My main bugbear is that I HATE that cooker anyway. I have never got on with gas cookers, I want a nice fan-assisted electric cooker with easy-clean halogen hob, but the previous owners of the house tiled over the electric cooker point, and we have no idea where to find it. I can't afford to have the tiles/units stripped looking for it and then re-tiled |(we are not DIYers, DH computer geek, not in the least practical). A small lottery/premium bonds win would deffo be put to this purpose.

The upper small oven of that cooker stopped working properly (doesn't come up to temp) just before Christmas last year, apparently it isn't fixable !! but I figured I could live with it, and hoped I could afford to redo the kitchen by the tim,e the whole thing went pop.
    Sigh ...!

I'd be taking that as a sign that it's someone else's turn to host xmas dinner;)
