Cleaning second hand baby toys

Wondered if anyone could give any advice on cleaning second hand baby toys. I have been given a load of toys which is great but not sure the best way to clean them so they will be safe for baby? Can anyone help?

Anything plastic dish washer, anything soft washing machine, anything wood a damp cloth.

Some stuff may not survive the WM but unless high quality then don't worry just chuck.

Most baby toys will survive the dishwasher, or a sink of soapy water. It's not that difficult.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
  • Most things can be cleaned properly with hot soapy water. Don't feel the need to slosh disinfectant around as it's not really necessary unless you suspect the toys are bemerded or contaminated in some way
  • soak them in bottle sterilizer

Put them in a pillowcase and then in the washing machine.
  • Thanks very much for all of your replies, lots of the toys are plastic, so I will just use soapy water as my dishwasher is currently broken ;-(. I read somewhere to use bleach but didn't think that was the best idea.

    Thank you :-0

dishwasher is great - I remember dishwashing a bin bag full of mega blocks bought for £3 from a car boot and they have been played with and played with and played with!

I know some people put lego in pillowcases and shove them in the top shelf of the dishwasher when cleaning school toys at the end of the year (obviously after tying the end of the top closed first or you'd be finding bits in the filter for months).

We used to use a weak dettol solution when I worked in a toy library - but some of our stuff came back REALLY REALLY REALLY manky - not as manky as the state books got returned to a book library in though - the guy using a rasher of bacon (uncooked) as a bookmark being a noteable one!

hard plastic toys (bought from charity shops etc) I soak in a solution of Milton. soft toys go through the washing machine with bio powder used. any soft toys obviously 'chewed' upon get discarded!

    bemerded

    Great word B&T :D

If they were from someone I knew I'd be satisfied with the DW or hot soapy water, from a stranger, milton.
