i have six dogs two bullmastiffs and 4 douge de bordeauxs the ddbs cost 4k in total to buy and the bullmastiffs 1k in total
and while im sure the cost of one dog is nowhere near what my cost is even for one dog it still adds up to a pretty sum

:rotfl: I bet that scared you when you wrote it all down didn't it! I've just the one Mastiff, but I gulped when I actually wrote down on here what he cost.....and a couple of hours later the doorbell went with a new bed for him at the cost of £140.

Even the last collar I got for him was handmade by a saddler because he has a 32" neck and 'off the peg' collars wouldn't fit.....that set me back £80 :o

Mastiffs are a !!!!!! on the food when puppies too - mine spent the first 18 months on a mixture of chicken and tripe mince with goats' milk....I've noticed he eats less as an adult then when he was growing though.

  • Our dog costs us really nothing in accessories - we have a loop lead had it for over 5 years cost us about £3, dog doesnt wear a collar. His bed is my old bean bag (leather look) which is 4 years old covered with a blanket from primark £3. (very confortable and warm). Worming tablets couple of pounds and vaccinations on average £30.00. Food about £5 per week maximum !

Make £200 by end of January... £20.42/£200
Grocery Challenge £200 pm Jan £0/£200
January no spend days - 1/31

Apart from his castration costs. he is 6 years old and relatively fit, he also has our left overs (healthy food, rice, meat and veg) so this cuts down on his food too.

He needs to wear a collar with your address on when he's out of the house, its a legal requirement.

Our dog only goes for a walk up our back field and woods and never runs off it is private land. He is held on his lead for about 5 meters to get to the field.

  • I would definitely think about getting one from a rescue centre if you are serious about getting a dog. The centres are busting at the seams especially at this time of year with lovely dogs who are there through no fault of their own :(

"In the UK, the Control of Dogs Order 1992 states that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Your telephone number is optional (but we would recommend this).

You can be fined up to £5,000 if your dog does not wear an identification tag"

Its up to you if you want to take the risk, but if you're in anything that could be described as a public place, even if he's on lead, he should be wearing a collar.

Surely if your dog goes to the vets for his vaccinations that's a public place? Additionally if he ever ran off.... or was scared like poor Sazzybum's dog..

we drive to the vets and park in his private car park he has a lead on at all times. So no chance of running off. Our dog is so well behaved he doesnt move til you tell him to. So no chance of running off if he is on lead. That is only once a year and we go at night when the surgery is quiet. He finds wearing a collar irratating and last time we put one on it cause him so much pain and irriatation.
