Were you able to apply the code after the contract had been set up?

I know Orange allow 2/4 weeks.... do o2 allow anything like that?

I applied for the code before the contract was set-up so I can't comment, probably best to contact O2.

EDIT: I've just looked at the FAQs on the O2 site and one of them reads:
I currently have a contract with O2. Can I stop it to take advantage of this offer?
No. You will need to complete your current agreement before taking advantage of the offer. However, in the meantime, you can still use the offer for family and friends.
