Merryn Somerset Webb and Kirstie Allsop on R4

Heard a piece about the new mortgage rules this morning where Merryn Somerset Webb and Kirsty Allsop were invited to offer opinions.

Kirstie came over a little better probably because she's more at ease with this sort of thing.

MSW seemed to be advising that cash was a better long term investment than putting a roof over your head for the rest of your life. Kirstie disagreed and argued that being in retirement and owning your home was one of the best things that a individual or couple could do for their long term security.

Apart from that they seemed pretty much in agreement and came over as two sensible people.

Kirstie does have a face for radio. I get less frustrated when I can only hear her. I used to make my wife put a cardboard box on top of the TV when she was on. Just like her dad should have done when she started courting.

I'm sure there are a lot of losers who will listen to Merryn Somerset Webb, and do just that.

She's gone a younger much prettier sister, called Sophie.
  • Kirstie and Merryn should be made to battle out in a mud wrestling match.

Disappointing to see, in this day and age, that a woman in the public eye is still criticised for her looks rather than her opinions.

    Shame on you.

Kirsty did come across a lot stronger and more coherent than MSW, who was trotting out her usual "the sky is falling in" line.

Kirsty also won on the point of property being a better long term bet than cash. She correctly pointed out that inflation will quickly erode cash. MSW responded that some of MoneyWeek's reasearch showed that cash could do almost as well as property.

    Kirsty 1: MSW 0

I do love Kirsty ... she should do an update on how Rheinhard and the HPC guy did on their STR decision in 2003:

Nice to see the usual high quality of comments from nollag.

Kirsty's suggestion of a property being your pension is just plain ignorant, so was her call for more HPI. Her positions just don't add up... she's very concerned about the rise in the ages of FTBs yet she wants more HPI. Just doesn't really make much sense.

Similarly MSW didn't exactly offer sage investment insight.

Kirsty's key point on house ownership was that it ensures that pensioners would not be obliged to pay rent well into their old age.

A very valid point, and one not often picked up here.

As you have correctly pointed out MSW had no valid response

And pensioners would live off love and fresh air and free housing?

That having been said, kirstie did quote her out of context. MSW said that she thought property was an extremely bad investment at the moment and then kirstie suddenly piped in that cash in the bank over 10 years is a lousy investment (which it is) but its not exactly what MSW suggested in the first instance.

There was me thinking you couldn't be any more of a saddo.

And to top it off another HPC link.
