Are work xmas parties (and bonus) dead?

By parties - I mean meal out in restaurant. The vast majority of smaller, medium sized companies always have had parties whenever I've worked for them. Huge ones, I don't know as I've only worked for a *big 5* accountancy *big* firm and yes they did have a party. As I said before at the latter company I got pay rise, can't remember if Xmas bonus or not.
I only posted because you seemed to be insisting your experience was what happened everywhere. Just to reiterate, I have never had a paid for lunch nor a bonus nor a Christmas card from an employer and that is normal for employees in my (geographical/employment) area. I did say my husband had been to a paid for meal but this was stopped a couple of years ago.
Now, you and your friends *may* have a different experience, fair enough but it is not fair to say that your experience is standard practice everywhere. Nor is it fair to call other posters liars for disagreeing with you.
That said I hope you enjoyed your meal

Where I work (it's a small company with about 10 employees), we get a Turkey for Christmas, in the past we've had a Bonus (not this year though), which is a way of getting out of giving us a pay rise.
We all send our own cards, although the MD doesn't usually send them out. If we have a Xmas party we usually have it in February, that's paid for by the company, partners aren't allowed though.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £18,886.270 -
most places i have worked there is a contribution towards something organised by the management/hr. there is always an element of paying towards (multiple employers have been the same) when i have been its been through feeling i had to go rather than any element of wanting to go particularly. this year we got a christmas party (which i couldnt make) and a high street voucher (one of these multi retailer ones) used that to buy some treats for myself and fiancee for new year, it was in place of a treat hamper which to be honest is better for us, i'm an ibs sufferer and fiancee is diabetic, we can choose what is a treat to us and have things we can both have

Why is your friend getting a discount when she doesn't work there?
Also how do you know it's a good discount? Comapred to who else?
Please do not say its a good discount when you have no idea.40%? I have no idea if that's good or bad .
Guess its good if you get less or bad if you get more!
seriously, step away. You're making yourself look dumber than a bucket of dumb.
You know if it's a good discount when you get the bill and a discount takes the price down a lot. The friend got a discount because, as already mentioned, their boyfriend worked there; I'm sure you don't need it explaining in crayons to work out that they got their discount because of the boyfriend.
And you don't know if 40% is a decent discount? now you're either thick or trolling, but i'll explain it for the sake of it. 50% = half price. 40% = £40 off from £100, so if the meal was £100 then they paid £60 and didn't pay for the wine that was thrown in.
If you weren't trolling and really didn't know that 40% is a good discount, and really don't think that the wine was free to the party; then your parents have my sympathy.0 -

The poster was saying because their friend got a discount I am a liar!0 -
when i worked at kwik save years ago we had a Christmas party paid for, but that was only because we had hit a massive target that year. I've worked in care and most stuff is already paid for, so we didn't get a bonus. Worked at Sainsburys, hadn't been there long enough to get the discount as was only a temp. Temp at a chocolate factory - got a Christmas meal and some free chocolate. Worked at the ice cube - got some free drinks when it was the closing party. Worked in an office for a food place - got a discount at their stores. I think most places don't really do massive parties any more like they used to:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one

My company stopped Christmas bonuses years ago and don't send Christmas cards, they make a donation to charity instead.
They do pay £20 a head towards Christmas meals/parties etc and I am lucky that I work across different departments so have attended 3 staff parties already with a 4th in a couple of weeks.
The managers normally contribute more than the allocated £20 so all have been freebies for me.Lightbulb moment Dec 2005 - debt £23700
