We have a 8 old month baby help needed asap please.

Hi everyone, i have not been onto the forum for ages now and i am back after some help please. Anyway me and my girl friend have an 8 month old baby girl and need a bit advice on what we can claim as my girlfriend MA money stops the 30th of DEC! She has been working 1 day a week, using her 'keep it touch days' to earn a little bit of extra cash other the Xmas period. She was planing to keep to working the 1 day a week in the new year aswell, as its the only day that i can look after the little as we cant afford child care.
She went to the job centre on friday to ask what was next? Neither of us have ever been on jobseekers so its all a little odd to us. She got a very hostel response, they told her that she needs to be looking for full time work 40hours a week. What is silly as we cant afford child care. She got them to agree to 24 hours week, but they have set it out that she would have to work 7 days a week. Again child care issue, the women didnt want to listen.
The missus kept telling them that she already works, but they didnt want to know and the lady who she talking to said that if she finds a job with that she would have to leave her current one. She is due to go back to the job center tomorrow!!!!!!! to sign on, but we have been reading that if the claimer works 16 hours a week or the partner works 24 or more hours a week you cant claim anyway? We are so confused and no one seems to want to help.

So my questions are what can we claim? Taken into consideration
the following facts:
1) I work 40 hours a week and earn 20K
2) we live in housing association
3) we currently get child benifit
4) tax credit what is only (£40 a month)

We both know with the country in the its current state finding a job now is very hard and that most employers wont take a 2nd look at a women with a baby with no child care.

We could do with a little advice as iam sure that other people on here would have the issue?

  • You can claim help with childcare costs through tax credits.

How much will she be earning from the one day a week?

working 1 day a week she would earn just over a £100 a month. From what i understand they pay a % of it, and the cheapest we have seen it around our way was £52 a day.

she doesnt need to sign on, so why doesnt she just look for work on her own, looking for hours that are opposite to yours? if you work days, she works nights or evenings, or vice versa.
Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest.

  • That is correct they pay a percentage. Have you looked into how much you would qualify for?

How many hours would she work to only receive £100 a month? Can she not increase her hours?

We don't qualify for child care help, as she needs to work more 16 hours a week. No she cant increase her hours as we don't have anyone to look after the baby and that is all her work can give her at the moment due them cutting back.

Good idea, but have actually looked at the state this country is in!!!! how many people are unemployed!
We have looked into an evening or night job, but there isn't many evening jobs around our way at the moment. As the missus say's how is she supposed to work all night and then look after the baby all day as well.

If she works nights while he works days when do you propose she would sleep?

If she has paid sufficient national insurance contributions pre maternity she may qualify for contribution based JSA for up to 6 months which isn't means tested. I believe that after that the JSA would finish due to your income. She would have to say she was willing to work 40hrs a week I think although I wouldn't worry too much about them actually finding her a job as they generally arent too good at that!

But if she increased her hours she will qualify for child care help so wouldnt need anyone to look after baby. What were her hours before she went on maternity leave?

    Hi OP

I don't believe your partner would be entitled to claim JSA as you would be exected to support her and your baby. If your claiming all you are entitled to then the only way to increase the income to the family home would be for her to find work - try using the turn2us.co.uk calculator and pop in some scenarios of expected number of hours/childcare costs and salary to see whether it would be worth getting a day job with associated childcare costs or better for her to maybe get a job that works around your hours - evenings or weekends maybe? Or could she look into some form of self employment? The other way to increase income is to decrease expenditure - is there anything that you are spending out on each month that could be cut/cancelled - I managed to 'up' my income considerably by just this method when my hours were reduced.

Good luck whatever you decide - you should be able to find something that works for you :)

Did you not read that they are CUTTING BACK, i.e staff, hours, money over all.
