what uses most gb

Hi all

We have 10gb allowance per month with BT. Last month this went over and I would like to establish what could have been the cause.

Can you tell me what uses the most?

I do emails and look at web pages and occasional you tube but don't download anything really. I have uploaded photos to snapfish does that make a difference?

Our son who is living here at the moment has an iphone does that increase the usage.

Any tips would be helpful.

Thanks

  • Downloading movies and watching the BBC iPlayer can be quite greedy. Is your son's phone constantly updating or connected to Facebook?

Anything to do with viewing videos. This means youtube, watching movies, watching short video clips, iplayer, your son watching videos/youtube on his phone.

Everything else (email, etc) is insignificant.
  • Yes, uploading photos will make a difference. Usage is metered by both download AND upload. If you have a camera with a lot of megapixels and are uploading the full size originals to Snapfish, this could use up a lot of your allowance if you're transferring a lot of photos. As an example, the last photo I took was over 5MB. That's a pretty average file size for my camera, which is around 12MP.

Most likely culprit is the videos though, especially if you're watching anything that was shared in HD. As another example, a full film streamed in HD is around 4GB. Assuming that the film is around two hours long, that means you'd only have to watch a few minutes of HD videos each day to use up half your allowance.

There is no difference between downloading and streaming. If you use iPlayer. Youtube etc, it will eat bandwidth. Anything you upload also counts, and video or images are large files.
