Buying new handset for existing network contract

Forgive me if this sounds daft but I'm no expert on these things.

My brother is a few months into a contract with thee which he is happy with. What he is not happy with is the phone - nothing wrong with it, just that he doesn't like it.

I was thinking of buying him a new phone and thought I could buy a PAYG phone on the same network that he could use (removing the PAYG SIM and using his current SIM).

Does that sound right? I want to buy a new phone rather than a second hand one.

Thanks for any advice
