Yeah it is a bit of a myth, Im responsible for all of my boundry for some reason!?!

I've got relatives in the same position. The only benefit is that you get to choose what fences you have all the way round your garden and don't have to put up with your neighbour's choice.

True, made me laugh when I moved into my new purchase though - next door neighbour is an estate agent and when I asked him to go halves he told me it was my resposibility - anyway the fence looks tatty and has been like that over a year. about a month or so ago he said he would "help" me erect a new fence but not help fund. I told him I needed a new boiler, new windows etc first.... you never know if I keep holding out he might go halves with me :D
I wouldnt mind doing and funding myself so much but the garden is 40 metres long.

.. sell your nice secure fencing and replace it with a nice wide-gapped picket fence that does absolutely nothing to contain his dog. Afterall, he says it's your fence, your responsibility - but you're not obliged to pick a fence that suits his needs!

    Great comment !

My fence on one side of the garden is rotted and has needed fixing the last couple of years but i'm reluctant to replace it. We put it up probably about 20+yrs ago and have painted it regularly, each time the guy next door has said "I must do our side", but he never has. I can't see the point now of paying for new fencing if they're not helping keeping it in good condition. So for now i've done some temporary repairs and planted ivy cuttings all along it. I hope they'll grow over the next few years then at least my side will look Ok. When we put the fence up we ripped privets out, so not sure historically who owns it.
Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

If it's your fence, the neighbour shouldn't do anything to it without your express permission. It's certainly not his responsibility to maintain your fence.

It is not the ops responsibility to fence in the ops neighbours animal, neither is the op required to actually put a fence up unless the ops deeds require it and even then if it is by covenant then it may be very likely that the other party of the covenent is no longer concerned about it.
