I always made a days feed in advance, and stored in the fridge, never used a bottle steriliser either, shoved them in dishwasher. Both of my children slept in own rooms from newborn as well. Thank the lord I'm not having anymore children, I couldn't cope with all the "new" advice given to new mothers, it's a hard enough job as it is with a newborn, never mind having to make up a feed at 3am with a screaming baby in arms, and baby waking the whole house up.

totally agree! advice when i was born was to make a full days feeds up store in the fridge and reheat. oh and put baby to sleep on their tummys. im still here aint i? did me no harm at all.

my eldest was bottle fed. i used boiling water to make the feeds. the powder should be sterile as its made and packaged in a protective atmosphere and the boiling water would kill off any bacteria that had snuck in there. its stored at a temp that inhibits bacteria growth.

i smiled and nodded with my HV and did what my intuition told me.

Hi again and thanks for replies!

I do a mixture of BF and formula at the moment which seems to be working well, over the last month or so we've been finding our feet in a new routine (I had a thread recently) - but basically he gets BF when he wakes and then a bit later breakfast - baby porridge with fruit puree which I make with about 100ml formula. Then he gets formula before he goes to bed and the rest is BF. (as well as all the solids of course and some water to drink)
I'm also sticking to the advice not to give cow's milk as a drink until 12 months, after that I'll be happy not to buy the funny smelling stuff!

I'm not so worried about it- he's drinking it fine. I was just a bit disturbed that it looks grainy, not like the previous stuff, and was wondering if I was doing something wrong, but it doesn't seem like it.

ETA: As it's just the milk for the porridge and the 8pm bedtime feed, I make it all freshly. Not sure what I'd do if it was the middle of the night though! Was always glad I was BFing then!

I keep powdered milk indoors for the rare occasions when I run out of milk and I've found that it separates if it's been open too long and has dried up a little, or has gotten damp. If you're using a new tin and you're satisfied that it was properly sealed when you opened it, then it may have just got a tiny bit damp whilst in your cupboard, kitchens tend to be steamy places!

(I know lots of us are still here after being put to sleep on our tummies but there are lots of babies who tragically aren't. The most recent advice, which is backed up by lots and lots of scientific research, is to put babies to sleep on their backs. Please, all of you new mums, I know that you hear a lot of conflicting advice but this is really important for newborns.)
