question about baby formula

Options
Hi,

Am relatively new to using formula - LO is 10 months old and we just finished a box (no.2 I think?) and now have a new one of the 10-12 month stuff.

I've tried making it a few times with different temperatures of water, but it's always grainy/split.

Is there anything I could be doing wrong? I've been making it the same as the previous stuff....

    What brand are you using?

Most people I know put the boiling water into the bottles and only add milk when they're about to use it, then heat the bottle up?

Strange. I've made formula with all sorts of temperatures of water - including cold (*slaps wrist) but it's never split

Never heard of a 10-12 month formula? But following the instructions on the tin is probably your best bet.

Actually it's meant to be made with fairly hot water to kill off any bacteria
E.g. Boil kettle, leave for half an hour and make bottle up, stand in cool water if it's still to hot.

  • It's Nutrilon - don't know if that's a brand in the UK (in Holland here).

The previous lot I was making with some boiling water and adding a bit of cold.

The new box I've tried with all different temperatures.

I'm really not sure hun, maybe it's a bad batch? How about contacting the manufacturer and letting them know, and try buying another box and see how it goes?

  • Thanks for the replies,
I did google a bit but didn't find anything really, so just thought I'd ask here before buying another box....
  • i always made the bottles up with freshly boiled water then shook each bottle till my arm was about to fall off then did the same again while i was waiting for the kettle to boil to heat them up then another few shakes to make sure it was the same temp throughout.

always found the cooler the water the harder it was to mix. i was a bad mummy though and made up a days worth of feeds which i stored in the fridge whereas you are now meant to make each feed at a time.

Looking at the website for Nutrilon...it looks like the Dutch version of what's called Aptamil in the UK. Like Aptamil, I see there's several versions of the stage 2 Nutrilon formula...including an "comfort" formula. In my experience, these easy digest/comfort/etc formulas do split when they're stored for a bit...and I think it was hard to dissolve in the first place too. So if you have the "comfort" version then I think it's normal, if you have the standard formula then I've not seen those split before.
  • Thanks again!
I have the stage 3 standard stuff. Also lot of stirring and shaking but maybe I just need to do more...?

I gave DS Aptamil ( the one for newborns) and that never split. But when we moved up a stage (to the one for 6 months plus) I found that it was grainy and did split. I didn't do anything different - used freshly boiled water, added the powder and the cooled it down. Anyway, I ended up going back to newborn one (my HV said it was fine). Once DS turned one, I went onto the Aptamil for aged 1+ and that was fine.
