Operational Allowance

Heard a rumor that the op bonus for Afghanistan is changing (reduced or removed).
I have tried in vain to actually find something written in stone about it but all i have drawn is a blank.
Anyone have concrete info about it not rumors?

Political suicide if it was withdrawn. Not heard anything, perhaps removed for those who stay at Bastion? Doubt that though.0

Not seen or heard anything to that effect as yet. Maybe it was a consideration, but like Esoog says it will be political suicide.Grab life by the balls before it grabs you by the neck.0

Hasn't the Op bonus just been doubled? Presuemably come the end of Op Herrick, it will end & any left doing mentoring may or may not receive it depending on what Op replaces it0

Doubled by this government from the date they took power, and the Council Tax allowance for those on ops has also been doubled this year - no way it will be reduced or removed whilst we're still in Afghanistan.Mortgage Free thanks to ill-health retirement0

They have used this allowance to partly justify the pay freeze. There is no way it will be removed or reduced. The government are already on a sticky wicket regarding redundancies, especially as this new round will make people in eligible for an immediate pension.
This allowance will be quietly retired when we are officially out of Afghan!0 -
I heard this dirty rumour too, i heard the Infantry and up front guys remain to keep it but itl be reduced by half after Herrick 15 (currently rolling) then eventually scrapped. This is for all the support units and regiments. Basically for the REMF's. Like i said i heard it as a duty dirty rumour.
Will wait for actual words in writing before i start to flap.Better to understand a little than to misunderstand a lot.0 -

To be honest, I'd find the reduced in half (after the big fanfare of doubling it!) a little hard to stomach, however in the cold light of these tough times I can see the "sense" in removing it for all the (vital!) "REMFs"Except the SPS, should be tripled.
Of course were this true, how do you distinguish a REMF from a REMF? Plenty of RLC boys going on out CLPs getting plenty of action, or what about Int Corps as attached int or interpreters etc etc etc !0 -
Hi all,
AFF has not heard this rumour – nor do we believe it to be true. At present the Operational Allowance is often quoted by politicians – it is unlikely it is going to be reduced. We will however check with the pay and allowances section and report back."Official Organisation Representative
I am the official organisation representative of the Army Familes Federation (AFF). MSE has given permission for me to post letting you know about relevant and useful info. To be honest going on on CLP's doesn't distinguish if your a REMF or not, more or less a REMF to me is those who dont do daily patrols or live in PB's / CP's and those who dont move out the wire at all, those who dont know the difference between a Merlin and Chinook, those who buy tailored badges and put them all over their kit, those who sniper tape their helmets but dont know why its done but just do it for 'Ally' look. Whose who dont fire their weapon only the whole tour bar the time they zero'd on RSOI.
Its hard to determine who is a REMF and who isnt as alot of support roles work along side infantry out their in the PB's and that. But we all know majority of the support corps are classed as 'REMF'.Better to understand a little than to misunderstand a lot.0 -
One things for sure, as soon as we're done in the 'Stan it will be sh1tcanned.{Signature removed by Forum Team}0
