I remember when I worked for the council many years ago, as councils do from time to time they decided they would go for a cheaper end of the market product...namely proteus and rpp stuff instead of the normal crabtree and mk stuff we used to use.

Anyhow it was false economy as they were that many switches and light fitting failling after a few weeks they went back to using mk and crabtree.

My point is really, make sure you get quality fittings, quotes will be cheap obviously when inferior products are used...in the end you get what you pay for, pay peanuts and you'll get monkeys !

Even then though £4k is hellish steep even if using mk stuff
You may click thanks if you found my advice useful

Generally the electrics will be off for the whole time, although temporary extension leads and plug in lights can be supplied. To put the electrics back on fully at the end of the day is a time consuming and costly exercise (fine if you want to double the time and cost) - it's better to move out for the week - the house will be pretty dusty so you'll be doing yourself a favour - and proabably cheaper
  • I did a rewire last year where the house was occupied.

It is a bit more hassle, but I usually replace the consumer unit first, this way everything is RCD protected.
I then install a tempoary socket next to the consumer unit (I use this to power any chargers / tools and run an extension for the fridge / freezer / kettle [last item is of most inportance])

I usually then work from the upstairs down, disconnecting the new circuits when I replace them with new ones.

It is a bit more hassle, but sometimes needs must
    baldly going on...

Thnaks everyone for the replies, we are still saving and i so hoping it can be done very shortly before the summer. His dad is an electritian but we would be waiting many years for him to complete it.. hes had a full time different for 6 years hence he's not in the loop with the electritians in the area. You find sometimes you get better service having someone that does not know you..
