I want to buy 2 for my kids for Christmas (last minute decision) they have ipod touch are ipads basically a larger version? Or do they do loads more? Sorry to hijack post but thought while you were on the subject...............;):o;)

They are basically a large iPod Touch :) Although with a faster processor and a larger screen.

Some games and applications are written specifically for the iPad to take advantage of that large screen, but they do more or less the same thing.

  • Love my iPad2 , excellent for reading magazines ,pdf are good to .Get a good player so you can watch movies in divx ect ,and with the right system playing flac files at 96KHZ will sound better than most cd players ( got to get a camera connection kit to play 24bit mind ) .keep my Sony ereader for reading books but the iPad is so easy to use switch it on and within 2seconds you can be on the Internet (not waiting for the laptop to boot up :) ) .

If you buy the 3G, you can use it on wireless only. You can't buy the wireless and then use it on 3G later.

I have the first 16GB iPad, it has a series of the Sopharnos on it, some albums, some photos, numerous apps and isn't full.

Ok lets clear a few things up here. From the OP's original post I get them impression they believe there are different versions faster etc.

There is only 1 iPad 2 with different models that have larger storage and of course you can have it with or without 3g. Its that simple.

If you buy the wireless you can actually use the 3g from your iPhone which is what I do. Given that most places now have free wi-fi if I find the need to go online I just tether from my iPhone.

Storage. I had an 8gb iPhone that was more than plenty for me but with the 16gb ipad2 Im really struggling as you will actually only have 14 gb ish. The best games can take up to 1gb and my daughter has around 10 and I have around 10 plus the other amount of apps that are not even games. Then there are movies etc.

Although as somebody said you can swap stuff around, ie if you delete an app you can add it later, however as somebody who works in technology I HATE itunes as its a nightmare to add something as simple as movie. When you connect your iPad if goes through numerous processes of backing up and syncing this that and the other when all you want to do is quickly add a movie.

So in short get the one with the biggest storage you can afford.

The larger screen on an iPad is much better for anything involving reading - reading emails, reading websites, posting on forums, reading electronic newspapers/magazines (and although I don't like reading books on it, at least it is better than an iPhone for this). Watching films and TV programs is a lot better on iPad too. Lots of games have been designed to take advantage of the larger screen.

OH has an iTouch and a Mac Book Pro (previously bought him for Christmas and B/day) - I'm toying with getting him a iPad (32GB 3G) for Christmas - is there any point or would it be a waste of money?

I was thinkng of getting an iPhone 4, but I'm clueless about what a good deal would be/best place to buy. At least with the iPad, it's one price!

And those people with iPads, do you carry them around with you? Or do they stay at home?

An iPad is more convenient than a laptop for using on a train, in bed, on the sofa, etc, so even if your OH has a laptop an iPad would still get use.

You can get an unlocked iPhone from an Apple Store and get a sim only contract.

Yes I carry the iPad with me if I'm going on public transport.
