Help! Toilet training! (and now sleep help needed)

So we brought Frank the Dachshund home yesterday and already having a bit of trouble with toilet training. Obviously not expecting miracles after 1 day but if someone could give some tips on how to make things a more positive experience for him that'd be great.
He refuses to follow us outside, HATES the cold and rain and just paws at the door whilst whining really loudly. Then will go to the toilet inside once we get in
Please someone tell me it gets better lol.

Our doglet hates the cold/rain too! Try going outside with Frank - it might sound like a pain but he'll wee, you can praise him exactly as he goes, and then run back inside!
Not that it matters, but is he a new pup or an older rescue dog?
He might've been 'trained' on puppy pads or newspaper, so learnt that going inside is OK. The general thinking now is to dispense with those, and get the pup/doglet out regularly - after food, after drink, after play, after sleep, and every half hr in between, so the dog only ever has the opportunity to 'go' outside and can never 'practice' going inside.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on."No matter how little money and how few possesions you own, having a dog makes you rich." - Louis Sabin0 -
If he's anything smaller than a St Bernard (which he obviously is), he can be made to go out. Keep doing it until he gets the idea - resistance is futile.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

Stay outside with him, don't cave until he goes! This might even help because he'll learn pretty quickly that if he wants to go back into the warmth he has to produce the goods.0

That's what I did with my dogs. Then when they do produce, praise them to the skies. But if they do it indoors, point to the offending poo or wee and say "No!!" a few times. He'll soon get the message.0

Yep, we hav been going out with him and waiting but at present he is having to be carried out as runs aways and wont come out on his own! He is 9 weeks old, hopefully he will get the hang of it soon. Its just hard because he makes such a fuss jumping at the door and barking it doesnt seem like he has any intention of going! Think the breeder had them going on newspaper so this probably hasnt helped!0

Have now moved him to the very end of the kitchen next to the back door. He does seem to get a bit whingy when he has to go and ALMOST put his paw over the threshold to go outside a minute ago but gave a look that said actually no its too cold lol. hopefully soon he will go out by himself!0

Pop the lead on, and make really encouraging 'oooh, lets go outside, what fun' noises."No matter how little money and how few possesions you own, having a dog makes you rich." - Louis Sabin0 -

I have had miniture dachunds since I was small
The one I have now Janey (weve had since 7weeks) is now 7.5 YEARS. She still will wee in the house if its wet outside because her belly is close to the floor and she hates getting wet lol.
Without our puppy Charlie (15 weeks) We started with the training pads because thats all he knew. on day 3 we showed him the dog flap and encouraged him to go outside. WE then took him outside consitently and the odd times he weed we would praise and reward with a boneo. He has had 2.5 days with just 3 tiddles in the house but the rest and poops outside! Just keep at it and eventually he will learn what to do! The second u can get rid of pads/papers do it. Charlie would get lazy and just wee on the pads because it was there.NanMias - cyber granddaughter!

We're basically following Ian Dunbar's teaching as much to the letter as we can and are crate training ours. We've had three accidents in the first fortnight and none so far this week. The accidents were our fault as we weren't watching him.
Basically if you're not there to watch him every second then he should be in his crate (which should have plenty of chew toys). Take him out every hour to see if he wants to do his business. If he hasn't in two or three minutes put him back in the crate for 15 mins and then take him out again, and continue until he does - it won't take long. Having done his business then play/train for a few minutes then back in the crate. After eating/drinking wait five minutes and take him out. After playing take him out. It won't be too long before he spends more time out of crate than in it, and he'll be telling you when he wants a wee (as ours is doing now).
I highly recommend this website.
