    Unlikely. You'd be likely to be asked for three items from list B instead, or perhaps a copy of a medical card, birth certificate or similar. There are always alternatives. All the ML requirement is designed to do is to give the Police an audit trail to follow in the event of a suspicion, by having as much relevant documentation as possible.

    Actually they do accept them- I have a freedom pass ( for a health reason) and a specialist solicitor accepted it along with letter id.
    Stop! Think. Read the small print. Trust nothing and assume that it is your responsibility. That way it rarely goes wrong.

    Grrr... Just going through a house purchase at the moment and realised that my wife's passport has recently expired. She only has a Provisional Driving Licence (photocard).

    The mortgage is approved and we've done business with the solicitor in the past six months so I'm hoping that the solicitor will see us as a Known Customer.

    The Estate Agent has asked to see a valid Passport or Driving Licence however they state that a Provisional is not acceptable. I'm hoping to argue with them that a Provisional is the real deal since the photocard was introduced. I'd like to know if this is specifically mentioned in legislation, or if it's the policy of the Estate Agent - i.e. negotiable.

    Passport application is in the mail Tuesday as I'm not quibling over £77.50 for the sake of lost/delayed transaction.

    This is likely to be the EA's policy rather than statute. Firstly, they are not a fundamental part of the money transaction - whereas the mortgage broker / lender, and solicitor are, so I'm not sure (but do not know for certain) how much relevance their money laundering checks have.

    Secondly, they must have a list of backup ID available. They cannot expect to prevent someone buying a house who doesn't have either a D/Lic or passport.

    Thanks. I'm guessing that they are acting as a Broker (Negotiator) which might be caught by the money laundering legislation. They do accept a Firearms Licence, Benefits book/card, Residence permit, ID card.... none of which we can provide.

    Estate Agent does not need your ID documents and has no rights to insist. As buyer, you are not conducting a significant financial transaction with the sellers agent. It is only reasonable for Agent to ask for Seller's ID.

    Agent should be told that you will verify ID through your own solicitor.

    As Negotiator or Broker, they are not conducting a significant financial transaction with you. Unless you are taking financial services from them [which is unwise]. Tell them to get on their bikes.
