You'd be surprised to learn that some people quite like this method of continuing their insurance. I do. I just look at the renewal quote, if i don't like it i shop around, if i do, hey presto, nothing for me to do !

I am not surprised at all. there are plenty of sheep in the world. I am sure many dislike the praxctice, as evident by the popularity of the subject!

The only ones who don't like it and complain are the ones who don't read the information that comes with their insurance documents. They are also the ones who come on the forum to "bleat" (geddit :D) about being "fleeced" (geddit again ? :D) :rotfl:

It is not a question of being fleeced since I am to be issued a full refund and have not been fleeced I would be questioning the ethics, and legality of the policy even if it were conveyed to me on a Goodyear Blimp and my declining were acknowledged in a similar format.

More people renew with the same company than move. So, it benefits the majority.

No option is going to make everyone happy. I am not particularly fond of auto renewal but I have taken advantage of it a number of times by staying with the same company and when i did want to change, I just made the phone call as it told me to do on the letter. No big deal.

Ooooooh - very defensive. I never said YOU had been fleeced. Question all you like, bet you'll check next time ! A lesson learned eh ?

Yes. the lesson is the same as the one where you don't leave the window open or burglars may enter.
At any rate, you appear disinterested in the actual question of the legality which was the point of my first post, and quite content with the current situation and the opportunistic, predatory sales methods employed by companies that have little regard for the customers preferences in favour of their own profit generating, probably unlawful practices.
  • Hopefully, a victim of this sharp practioce will haul one of the insurance scammers into court before too long and the issue will be resolved, just as it was with banking charges.

Why wait for someone else to do it? Why not fight the good fight yourself?

The FSA have looked into it and it's legal.
The FOS are happy with it as well as it's stops people driving without insurance.

As the rest have said, and it's pointed out on numerous threads, to get away with doing this the insurer has to:
    1. Put it in the Keyfacts part of the policy documentation so it's highlighted, AND
    2. Send you a renewal letter dated in enough time for you to have the option to opt-out of the renewal.

If you carry on reading the older threads you would have found I complained to the FSA about a brand in the Admiral Group because they didn't do 1 and also had other detrimental clauses in their policy. (They never got around to doing 2 as I complained soon after I got the policy documentation through the post. )

If you have the keyfacts part of your policy document then you can put in a complaint to the FSA if it's not mentioned there.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

It would require a court case involving claiming back money and since I am to be efunded, I am not one of those who will have a claim.
