Is 16 months less than a 'reasonable length of time' of durability for TV recorder?

My Bush TV recorder controls (cost £120) frequently freezes, both remotely and on the box, so I need to send it back. It was bought around 16 months ago byCredit Card and Argos via the Internet but collected it from store. Obviously is it beyond the official guarantee/warranty.
Could I use the sale of Goods Act 1979 to obtain repair, replacement or refund on this. It says goods should be of satisfactory quality, fit to do the job intended and last a reasonable length of time.
Not sure if I can return it via store.

You may need to prove that the fault was inherent and not a result of wear and tear (given it was bought over 6 months ago). Start by talking to the retailer, if they refuse to play ball then you will need to get independent evidence that the fault was inherent.
They can then replace, repair or partially refund.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
For consumer goods I would certainly say 16 months is too short.
However, as already stated, you may need to get a report that states the fault was inherent, and any refund will probably be less a figure for the time you've had the product.0 -

Just expanding on this point, if they do opt for a refund then I guess you would get less than £80 (50%).Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
Sorry it was a Humax rather than Bush! Anyway I must have bought the model indicated in post 13 here which would place the sale later than August 2010

Anyway I have just noticed the manufacturers warranty is in 10 different languages (but not English for some reason) however the French one says 'deux ans' the only part I can understand. So hopefully it is still within warranty after all. Damned if I can find the receipt though, only the box and barcode and paper sticker.0 -
Have you made sure you've got the latest software on it, cepheus? I've got a Humax PVR that used to freeze a fair bit - it's fine now."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

Not sure. My other Hitachi recorder dowloaded software automatically, which had its own seizure problems.
However this has only been a problem during the last few days.
It has missed programmes on 'series record' as well, since I bought it though.0 -

i would say for one bought at argos you did good to have it last 16 months.
i have had several, bush, toshiba, humax. the longest 1 lasted was 6 weeks and the shortest 10 seconds.
bought a goodmans from currys and its never had any problems0 -

Doing a new channel search wipes your series link. Do you regularly rescan for new channels? I must admit I've had the odd programme that didn't record but not so many that it's caused a real problem.
Try updating the software and see if this helps.
And when it freezes unplug it for a minute or so - this always sorts mine out."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
Hah, bush. I'm amazed it even lasted that long.0

OK I have given it a go, and placed it on automatic update. Seems to be working at present!
Not sure about the series recording, it may be due to rescanning but I think it happens more often than that. I have blamed it on reception, but this doesn't explain why it should cease to record all subsequent parts of the series.0
