Heating Coming on when timer set to off

Hi

I have my central heating on timer at the moment, 5.45-7am and then 5.15-7pm. However I noticed that the heating was on through the night last night.

Is there a reason for this i am missing or is there a problem with the boiler?

Many thanks for your help

  • Inadvertently advanced? Set to constantly on? Set to on all day, and you have the first timer period as your late 'on' and the second as the eaarly 'on'? Timer broken?

Assuming you check off everything on the list above, I'd go with broken timer.

Ours died a few weeks ago. The heating came on when it was meant to and then merrily ignored the 'off' message from the timer and just carried on going. We replaced the timer and all is well.
  • Its kind of intermittant. it decides to come on at random times.
I am off work tomorrow so i think i will keep an eye on what it is doing throughout the day.
Wasn't sure if it was something to do with the frost setting...

Depends on the timer controller you have.

Sounds like one of the following problems:

Some have a thermostat in them as well and have 'day' and 'night' temperature settings. If the night setting is to high, the heating will come on.

Also depends on the type of system you have - has it got a changeover valve? If so, this may be stuck and heating your radiators when it should be heating your hot water tank.

This does sound plausable as when I am at home at the weekend I usually have to knock the heating on for an hour to two as it gets cold.
How do I know if I have one of these?

Is it a mechanical or electronic timer? Is it separate from the boiler, or integrated into it?
  • It's a mechanical timer. It is fitted onto the front of the boiler.
Although I have a separate instruction manual for the timer so possibly an add-on?

Could it be a built-in frost stat? If the boiler is mounted in a cold place (such as a garage), then it may come on occasionally in very cold weather to prevent itself from freezing, regardless of how the heating controls are set.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • Could be a faulty frost stat or wire, our system went haywire recently, seemed to be the timer. Fitted new timer, still haywire. Fitted new frost stat, still haywire, new wire between stat and boiler fixed it.
  • Could be a faulty frost stat

Could be a fully functional frost stat because it has been frosty. :o

I set mine at 9 degrees. You?
