what happens when you open it ?
if you right click it , you might get the open with options come up, there you may be able to select ms word , or if it's a pdf file something like adobe reader
if you have no luck ask your husband what sort of file it is
  • like nickj said.. what happens when you open it as the solution depends on the problem

1 - everything is blurry = you've been poked in the eye
2 - it asks what programme to use = you either don't have word or it's not associated with .doc files
3 - it tells you it's the wrong version of word = you've got Office 2003 and he's sent a 2007 / 2010 document and you need to download the viewer for later versions (or he needs to resend in 2003 format)
4 - it tries to open in a different package = see number 2
5 - everything gets really hot = your computer is on fire

The file he has sent you is a Microsoft Works file.

You can get a converter for Office from the Microsoft web site here.
  • Word can open and save wps files so it sounds like you didn't have a file association set.
  • what do i do to set one? have emailed myself docs that have .doc or .docx at end but dont know what to save it as to have .wps at end to test it

  • save the attachment from the email (just onto the desktop will do), then right click and choose "open with". From in there choose Word and it should open it.

Of you can save it and then open Word and go to open, and change the file type at the bottom to Works 6.0 to 9.0 (very last option)
  • it doesnt give me word as an option

  • you should be able to browse, the word.exe file will be in something like c:\program files\microsoft office\office12 (depending on the version of word)
