Damaged suitcase during flight

Hello,

I returned from a flight from Bangkok (EVA Air) and I noticed that my suitcase was damaged (there were two cracks in the plastic shell).

The airlines had the suitcase picked up by a courier and sent to the Samsonite repair agent in Britain (K2).

The original RRP - confirmed by the agent was £360 (bought 5 years ago)

However, they only offer a refund for a mere £120 as they say that the suitcase has depreciated 20% per year.

They also say that they cannot return the suitcase or pay the £120 in cash.

They can only replace the suitcase with another from one available in their range.... and if the suitcase costs more...then I have to pay the difference.

I couldn't find much online about this..but the deal they offer doesn't seem to be to fair...

Is there anyone that could suggest how to approach Eva Air?

Thank you

I usually buy cheapo suitcases which usually get damaged on flights. I just chuck 'em and buy a new set in the sales. I always get a couple of years out of them!

I think I'd just get one of the B-lite cabin bags with the £120 and buy another suitcase elsewhere
If you don't want the cabin bag, sell it on ebay ??

    Crikey,
Instead of any of the above posters being helpful just wade in with their own stories. OK, the airline or the handling agents should give you a list of suitcases to choose from. If non of them are suitable claim off of your travel insurance. We had a Wakamitsu worth £200 damaged and sent the airline the link of a website where it could be purchased it from. They bought it and had it delivered. Don't be put off, hastle them till they do as they are obligated to do. goog luck
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

We have had two bags damaged both on flights to Manchester Airport, first time their baggage handling company Servisair said they would replace the bag next day, they showed me a picture of a gym sized holdall, mine was a two week holiday size holdall on wheels. I said no way and they caved and sent a similar sized Antler bag. Second time they offered a decent replacement Antler bag, they let us keep the original bags which were bought from M & S in 1998.

I think that you just have to be adamant they are not getting away with a shoddy replacement don't give in...good luck.

I would add to the comments to dig your heals in and fight your corner, although EVA Airways website relative to damaged luggage would appear to fit your experience. :)

Having had two pieces of luggage replaced in the last three years with handling agent Servisair, I can only personally report excellent service as the luggage was replaced on each occasion without question or even batting an eyelid with luggage of equal or superior quality supplied by damagedluggage.com.

    Tojo,

I did check the EVA Air website and I did find exactly the same information as you did. I am slightly annoyed that a suitcase that is valued £360 would be replaced with a £129 cheque.

I had a couple of colleagues who had the same experiences and they both had the full value of the luggage replaced.

Easyjet replaced the full value of the suitcase ( £215 by cheque) and (I think) KLM replaced the suitcase with the same model (newer version) without any issues.

EvaAir says 'according to the relevant regulations' but I can't find these regulations. They also say 'all airlines do this' but when I mentioned my two ex-colleaguesthen they just said 'we are different'.

I am ready to accept some depreciation. However, I think that £129 it is not enough.

When cases are damaged, are you supposed to report before you leave the airport? I went on a flight from Gatwick and when I unpacked, I noticed then that the padlock was missing. Nothing inside the suitcase was missing and no damage but it was a nice padlock which I now have to replace.
