sharing books on kindle

I've searched this, and can't find anything.
Dh & I each have a Kindle - they were gifts & we registered them separately on our individual Amazon accounts, because we understood that books could be shared between users for a limited time.
We now find out that books can only be shared between devices registered on a single account; each device can only be registered on one account.
To de-register one of the Kindles now, in order to re-register it means losing all the books alresady purchased.
This seems unreasonable, so I wondered if any MSE techies knew any way of dealing with this?
Thanks

  • have you connected to them to a computer like a flash drive? a bit of navigation and you can find the installed books, then connect the second kindle repeat the process but add the book to the location easy!! pm me if you need any help
  • You could return them to Amazon and complain - from what I read here their customer service is first class for disgruntled Kindle users - be sure to post back how you got on!

    Note!
if you have a smartphone or a tablet (or a PC) then if you transfer DH's kindle to your account, DH will still have the books listed under his kindle account.

So DH can use the kindle app (rather than the kindle device) to read the books.

From what i've heard it's a bit of a slog to get Amazon to transfer book between accounts (if they ever do it!)

The joys of DRM. You could always just swap kindle between yourself's. Unless you use them on long journeys for work or something.

My solution is to not buy from Amazon in the first place

Buy elsewhere and use Calibre as a library and converter, you get to do what you want with your books then
  • Sharing e-books is not simple, as the OP has discovered.

The publishers are not daft, every traditional book that was lent was a potential lost sale.

The collapse of the Net Book Agreement meant cheaper books for most of us.

Publishers are using the technology to fight back.

It is simple, just don't use Amazon to buy them
We have 4 Kindles at home that share one Calibre library
  • Apologies for resurrecting old thread (we try to be very tidy over on GIOL and OS!)

I've got a tablet which claims to be compatible with Kindle books. However, when I try to download ebooks from Amazon it won't let me, as it says I don't have a device registered. It looks as if maybe I should be trying Calibre instead, but I wondered if anyone had any advice about how to get access to other libraries. Being a good MSEr I'm principally interested in free books, but I would be prepared to buy books occasionally too.....

What tablet? The Kindle ebook software (.mobi and .azw) is proprietary and will only run on Kindles.
To buy from Amazon you need a Kindle or to use the Kindle app, which is available for Android, PC, iPad etc.
If you buy books from elsewhere they will usually be in ePub format, which can't be read on a Kindle. Calibre can convert them for you, but if they're commercial ebooks with copyright then they'll have DRM on them, which will prevent them converting.
'Free' eBooks (Guteneberg Project etc) can be freely converted to a Kindle-compatible format.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thank you for clarifying. I have an Odys Xtreme, which I think is identical to this tablet (I bought it from Ashenko, and reckon what they are selling now are unbranded, identical tablets). http://ashenko.com/products/android-tablet-pc/8-inch-samsung-powered-tablet-android-23/

The bumph says 'In addition, the Kyros offers a unique app, the Aldiko E-Book, for downloading and reading thousands of e-books (which supports the ePub standard) for a complete mobile Internet solution.' So I am off to google guteneberg project :)
