When a Savills sign went up outside our house about 3 months ago, it VERY promptly ended up slumped next to the shed. Nothing more was said about it!

I think that should answer your question!

If it's put there by a sign company who have a contract with the letting agent, and the letting agent in turn has a contract with the owner of the neighbouring property, and the sign company have erected the sign within the bounds of the property owned by the neighbour, I don't think you have any rights at all, since you're unconnected to all three, and you don't own the ground that the sign has been installed on.

If the sign is within some shared garden ground that you have a share of, that's a different matter.

As long as they are tenants it's in effect their garden, so third parties can only put things in it with their express consent.
So obviously they can remove it, but legally they should not damage it.

They can remove it if they so wish. Out of courtasy they could call the agent and ask them to remove it.

There is a letting sign on my street that has been there since I moved in in 2006. There are actually about 4 from the same company and they look tatty and horrible. When I called they were very abrupt, and pointed to an ad that has been on rightmove for almost as many years and said they were allowed as they were still advertising a flat.

I then tried to apply for this flat online, and never get any response. It's also annoying as the advertised flat is about half normal rental, and drags down the rent in the street as it makes everything else look expensive, and makes people think 'what is wrong with that road?'
  • Under the planning laws they do indeed have a right to have a normal-size EA sign outside the property for the purpose of marketing. This sign should be taken down 14 days after the deal is in place.

If it is put on your property and you don't want it, you can take it down but should not dispose of it, and offer a chance for them to collect it.

If you have a problem with agents leaving signs up for no reason apart from self-promotion then you can contact trading standards who occasionally stamp down on this practice but normally don't have the time or inclination to properly enforce it.

    Drunk students often steal signs...

Not that you are a drunk student, but maybe some may pass by fairly soon?

Last year when it snowed, we saw several EA signs in our local country park - kids had been using them as makeshift sledges. :money:
  • If they tread on your plants and flowers, simply invoice them for the cost and your very "reasonable" professional charges to reinstate your flowerbed.
