Just saw this as breaking news on the beeb. Can't find as a news article yet, but is up as a press release on their website:

Morrisons is announcing today that it will create more than 7,000 new jobs in 2012 as it continues its store expansion programme as well as developing its manufacturing and logistics arms.
The company will be opening 25 new stores in 2012 as it seeks to ensure that more households have a Morrisons within easy reach. Currently there are more than six million households that do not have a Morrisons store within easy driving distance.

This is the kind of GOOD news story the HPC mob want to ignore...more jobs = more homes sold = HPI = no crash :money: :money: :money: :money: :money: :money:0 -
Wish Waitrose open more shops. Nearest one is an 80 mile round trip. Its a long drive for the weekly shop.
Our nearest town is is going downhill so fast that ASDA is becoming the quality option for shopping in that townI am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). I love it how supermarkets always say new jobs. Its often not new jobs just jobs lost else where when other shops close down or cut back. We got the same from Tescos trying to get a huge store in my town most of the jobs are for existing staff. Few people want Tescos as it will decimate that area
I dont shop at Morriosons anymore my local one is rubbish now it use to be fine and I would shop there for 10+ years but there prices have crept up so much is as cheap to shop else where for us0 -

The loss of jobs from local shops could easily be a higher number.0 -

I'd like to know how many of these new jobs are really 'new'.
We've got a Morrisons being built in our town now and that's promising lots of 'new' jobs, in reality it's going to be a mere handful of new jobs and an awful lot of jobs being replaced for all the ones lost in the many shops that were knocked down including the old supermarket that this one is replacing.
The new supermarket should do reasonably well in town and many people will be happy to see it finished but it's not really going to create a vast improvement economically. It's also caused the closure of some shops who's products will not be stocked by Morrison so we have lost some of our range of choice. Other local shops are wondering if they will be killed off when it opens.

True. But doesn't stop the large corporations continue saying the same thing. We got two stores in my town expanding Sainsburys and a new Tesco sometime this year. Most local people are opposed to Tesco due to its location.
The only time I can see these are new jobs is if the store attract new customers from further a field which I cant see that happen that much. I doubt few people will travel very far just to do weekly shop and a few odds and sodsMallotum_X wrote: »The loss of jobs from local shops could easily be a higher number.0 -
This is the model that supermarkets should be 'encouraged' to follow.
1) Build on brownfield sites
2) Loacte in urban areas rather than out of town
3) Improve the local area, through grants to local shops
4) recruit long term unemployed in the area.
