Is this faux hurricane debate still going on? I wish I hadn't started it now! :rotfl:

Do tropical cyclones occur in Britain?

Hurricanes are tropical features and generally require sea temperatures much higher than those around the UK, even in the summer. Hence, hurricanes cannot form at our latitudes. However, we are sometimes affected by deep depressions that are the remnants of tropical cyclones. Intense mid-latitude depressions, even those which do not originate from a tropical cyclone can produce winds of a strength equivalent to a tropical cyclone.
  • I seem to remember a certain BBC weather man saying something similar to this in the 80's. The same night we had a hurricane :D

No we didn't - it was a severe storm, but not a hurriance. Michael Fish was correct in saying that it was not hurricane.
As for the 'hurricane' in north scotland last week - even in the hurricane zone of the carribean, the hurricane season doesn't extend into December.
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • I think the question was what are they entitled to etc not if it was or wasnt a hurriance.

    What it was is moot.

It wasn't a real hurricane, but it was the closest thing Ive had to a real one in Scotland, give us a break and let us call it what we want! :rotfl:

Back to the issue, one of our depots closed at 8.30am (8-5pm work day) and our guys were sent home, and paid for the full day.

My work depot closed its gates at 11am and we were sent home about 1.30pm, again we were paid for the full day. There was never any mention of not paying us, it wasn't us who left, it was the work that told us to leave for our own safety.

You could try calling ACAS on 08457 474747, they are pretty helpful. They may ask you to check your contract and or company handbook, so it may be worthwhile digging those out and having a read through before you phone.
