Dog beds

Hi I cant afford to keep buying our 2 dogs any more beds as they (or rather one) just keeps destroying them.

Its impossible to stop this behaviour beleive me we have tried, even taken the beds away completely in the past few months but then they hog the sofa!

Anyone any ideas on how to make them ? Or anywhere that sels them really cheap as I need 2 (even if they only last 6 months) :o

I have already tried single duvet covers, sleeping bags and even second hand bean bags but their not tough enough or comfy enough apparantly.

Thanks in advance.

This is going to sound really silly but have you tried wrapping their bed in a fleece blanket? I'm assuming they have those ones that are like a big pillow/cushion. My dog used to chew his beds and I once did this simply because I didn't have time to get a new one for a few days, with the fleece on he left it alone. i then ended up using a fleece blanket to make a proper cover (like a giant cushion cover but sown on) for his bed. He did eventually make a few small nibbles in it but it always lasted MUCH longer than the normal bed.

Have you tried posting on the pets forum?
What matters most is how well you walk through the fire
  • IMO, I would try to work out why the one dog is doing it. Is it because of separation anxiety, or trying to play with the other dog, or has it simply been allowed to develop a habit?

All mine have plastic beds with a piece of vet bed in them, however I also have rubber backed mats on the tiled kitchen floor. The vet bed can be picked up fairly cheaply, although the larger the dog, the more expensive the bed. I do also allow them to lie on the sofa, HOWEVER they get off when I tell them to. So perhaps you could teach them the 'off' command...

Personally, I would never use old duvets, bean bags etc for dog beds if I had a chewer, if the stuffing was eaten it could be an expensive trip to the vets

  • I agree with the above post, the Vet Bed can be bought quite cheaply from a certain auction site, and the majority of them wash very well. Our labrador was a chewer, i lost count of the number of beds he had, then someone suggested vet bed, i bought 2 pieces one for his basket and the other as a spare, it worked a treat he never attempted to chew these and they are a couple of years old now.

    Hiya :)

I'll move this one across to our pets board where I'm sure there'll be plenty of help.

    Good luck :)

  • All through my childhood in the 60s our resident dogs had a cardboard box cut with a semi circle at the front with a piece of off cut carpet in the bottom and an old blanket. Never did them any harm and you could just throw away the box on a regular basis. (Think this was something to do with getting rid of any fleas they may have picked up)

Are your dogs only wrecking the beds when alone (seperation anxiety)? if so you need to try train them to stop this.

For seperation anxiety I go out of the house for a few seconds and return (not making any attemp to interact with the dogs) I keep doing this for longer and longer periods of time.
I defy any dog not to get thoroughly fed up of anticipating if i am coming back or not. This will take time. Also I leave a radio on for company. Good Luck
