Hair dye irritation

Glad you found the thread - there are a few threads on the same subject.
I've just ordered sanotint which is a permanent hair dye but without most of the nasty chemicals - including PPD - however i've since read that it might have a related chemical in it. I'm going to check this out soon.0 -
You can buy dyes at health food shops which claim to be lower in chemicals. Might be worth a look. Or switch to semi-permanent which are always much gentler.I bleach my hair which can leave my scalp red and sore for a few days. it is just one of those things.0

Or get someone from USA toget you hair dye, America have banned the nasty chemicals.0

A girl i work with used this hair Dye and her face swelled up like a balloon, she had always used the same hair Dye, therefore didnt do a test patch before hand. Thinking it would be ok.
I now do a test patch before i colour my hair, even if using the same brand as usual to take extra procaution as i cant be sure wether ingredients have changed.
I dont recommend it being banned as some people cant afford to go to the hair dressers regular, however i do think more precaution should be taken and doing a test patch before using the product should be advertised in bold letters more.0 -
Anyone know the best way to find a USA stockist? I'm still on the case - I don't want to use anything containing PPD or related chemical. As well as the allergies it might explain the rise in breast cancer in women!
For the record one young girl died suddenly after using hair dye, after having it on for 20 mins. I don't think they have confirmed it was the hair dye but it was considered the most likely reason.
Didn't know PPD was banned in the US....If i find a good stockist I will post back0 -
Found this article in the Guardian and it says that America has not banned PPD's

Just been looking up Elumen hair dyes on google. Worth looking at.....US based company, may be pricey (haven't seen the price yet but from what i've read from reviews) - but doesn't use PPD or any related chemicals....works by ion something or other....LOL! Will copy and paste this to other hair dye threads here. :-)0

I asked the company that produces 'natures grey busters' to send me their list of ingredient for their 'natural' semi-permanent colour. The second ingredient is
Propylene Glycol raises a medium level of health concern because:
This ingredient is suspected of causing immunotoxicity, according to sources compiled by Scorecard (https://www.scorecard.org)
This ingredient is suspected of causing respiratory toxicity, according to sources compiled by Scorecard (https://www.scorecard.org)
This ingredient is suspected of causing skin or sense organ toxicity, according to sources compiled by Scorecard (https://www.scorecard.org)
This is from the website https://www.goodguide.com and is another dodgy ingredient to look out for, as it's in quite a few things. It seems small amounts give a smaller risk (obviously!) but 2nd in an ingredients list doesn't look good.0 -

Allergic reactions to things are becoing more and more common (As life becomes more and more sterile and not keeping our immune system busy with enough bugs?)
Just because you've not had an alergic reaction to a substance in the past, doesn't mean you won't have one next time you come into contact with it. Reactions like this are mercifully very rare - but they can happen.
Patch testing each and every time you use products like this is a very sensible precaution.Dum Spiro Spero0
