my man at dvla local office told me a year ago all offices would shut once all the logistics of online taxation/sorn /mid were in place and now the breaking news is
Government proposing shutting 39 DVLA regional offices, putting 1,200 jobs at risk

not good for a lot of us and not good for the public
example taxation class change from disabled to plg can only be done via a local office

Roads Minister Mike Penning says it will make dealing with the DVLA easier and quicker".
well ive heard it all now as he obviously has never had to deal with dvla swansea because if he had he would know that a dvla local office is like an oasis in a desert of sand because they can sort things rather than lie down telephones even though your call is important to them
  • The only dealing I've had with the local DVLA office in Worcester has been to change over my private registration plate from car to car, which has over the last few years changed from being able to do it there and then to just handing in the forms and waiting whilst it's sent off and returned in the post. This has really made the local DVLA office redundant to me anyway.

If I could change the plate over online, it would only make life easier.

Yeah, usually because your paying an unfair fine for them losing your paperwork......

I think the DVLA should be shut down and the contract passed to another business/organisation that's not just out to selectively screw motorists out of their hard earned cash.

If they can bring all the services online this could be ok, providing there is assurance that free internet access (e.g. at local libraries) is available to all with staff on hand to assist those not so good at using computers.

Personally I've always thought it a bit daft that when changing a car to disabled tax class, the person has to attend the "local" office which is often quite a long distance away!

    Also:
General secretary Mark Serwotka complained that, out of an organisation's workforce that had "proven time and again that they are highly efficient"
Has this guy ever actually been to a DVLA local office. I've been to several and with the exception of the Cardiff one (which is, admittedly, damn good to deal with) they are filled with slow, unhelpful, uncooperative jobsworths.

Maybe he's only been to the Welsh ones?

I was actually really pleased with the service I got from the Cardiff one when I was importing my car. SOP is after registering it, to send you all the paperwork in second class post and when I called at 4 on a Friday the guy there confirmed it was going in tonights post.

I had a shiny "new" car I couldn't drive and the guy understood that and let me collect the paperwork + tax disc from the office, had to ask for him in person as there's no procedure for this. Got out just in time to get some numberplates made up using the paperwork and thus had the car for the weekend.

Wouldn't have had that from any of the English ones I'd used previously though.

    All generalisations are false*.

I've been to the Bristol office a couple of times and they've been very helpful.

    *Including that one.

No, you can do that by post. You just won't be able to do it as quickly as now.
