Father Christmas Quandry

My 3 & 6 year olds are at a lovely stage where they are really getting into the whole Father Christmas thing. DD loved meeting FC at a party at the weekend and is really excited about seeing FC with his sleigh and reindeer in town on Saturday.

Small quandry, my dad (their Grandad) is playing the Father Christmas for a local charity. I don't want then to discover Grandad is FC....but don't want to stop them seeing him, really not sure how to go about it?! Ant ideas??

when my dd asks why santa is different in all the different places I tell her they are just grown ups pretending to be santa to help him out as the REAL santa is far to busy making the toys at the North Pole to be able to be everywhere - it doesn't seem spoil the magic of seeing the big guy in the red suit.
People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

  • My nephew (6 years old) is very curious and keeps asking how father christmas can be in every shopping centre. My brother told him that father christmas is very busy so every year he sends letters to some grown ups who have been good all year and he asks them to help him out by finding out which boys and girls should go on his 'good list'. They might not mind so much if they thought that grandad was working for santa....

We told ours that the Santas you see at parties and shopping centres are just FC's helpers. The real Father Christmas lives in the North Pole and is busy during December getting everything ready on the sleigh: He only comes to England overnight on Christmas Eve, and no-one EVER sees him! Last year a particularly unconvincing one (tall, thin and wearing what appeared to be a dressing gown over skinny jeans and Converse) caused our sharp-eyed 4 year old to question the whole Santa thing in the local garden centre, so it helps to have a credible story at the ready!:D

why cant you just say to grandad that your bringing them to see him and for him not to mention his grandad and just actlike he would with all the rest of kids

  • When I was a kid my best mate's granddad played Father Christmas at our school fair. We were really excited that Father Christmas had lent him one of his spare suits so he could help out. :D

I wondered that! I think DD’s will believe it even more as ‘father christmas’ wont even need to ask what their names are!
  • We told ours that FC in not real and is just the front for a ridiculous commercial annual event that only serves to make companies rich, and families poor.

j/k we go the "helper" route!
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

Will they definitely notice do you think? I took my DS who is only 2 to a Christmas party yesterday morning where a good family friend was playing Santa. My DS didn't notice at all (and in fact was terrifed of him) but what's worse is I didn't twig who it was either for at least half an hour :rotfl:

With padding and a false beard covering most of the face and a hat covering the hair, it can be really hard to recognise people even if you know it is someone dressed up
