I got letters for people, who it would appear have ever lived in this house since it was built, as there were many surnamed. I would get about 10 items a week and that went on for 6 months. Christmas was fun, getting more cards for other people than I did myself! Up until the start of Jan, I had written 'RETURN TO SENDER. NOT AT THIS ADDRESS' on them all and posted them back. I started to recognise some of the letters so then started writing 'TAKE THE HINT THEY DONT LIVE HERE. ANY FURTHER LETTERS WILL BE SHREDDED' Some carried on and thats exactly what I did with them, and they seem to have stopped apart from the odd one now and then.

Ive only opened a couple of them cos I had 4 identical letters within the space of 2 weeks, and someone owes the student loans company £2.5k and the same person owes scottish power around £200. There were threats of collection agents and such stuff. I did think of calling them to tell them I lived here now, but thought it would get me involved with it, so I didnt bother. Scottish Power annoyed me the most though as I am a customer with them, and they should see I am paying my bills just fine!

JasonW I would contact those companies ASAP as any debts registered to your address can affect your credit rating. A few years ago we kept getting post for someone else which had our address on it. At first we sent the post back unopened saying the person didn't live there then one day I had had enough and opened one letter which turned out to be threatening to send in the bailiffs. I contacted the bank concerned and told them that we had owned the house from new and the person had never lived there at all. I got a copy of our credit report and had to get the bank to write to them to remove all the incorrect information from it. Luckily we hadn't tried to get any credit so hadn't had the embarrassment of being turned down for anything.

I think this is incredibly serious, someone less honest than you could have used it and caused all sorts of problems.

Also, what about the possibility that someone else has received your card??

I can't think who to report this too but I don't think halifax should be allowed to just get away with this error.

I've recently moved my current account and mortgage after an incredible catalog of errors and incompetence courtesy of the Halifax . Vote with your feet, they'll get the message eventually !

Don't you have to ring up the bank and get it activated before you can use it? I have just had a new credit card and had to answer a few security questions before I could use it. You say your addresses are similar. Isn't this the fault of Royal mail then?

edit. just reread your post. They printed your address on their letter?
I've had credit cards that have had a sticker saying I should telephone to activate the card but have just taken the sticker offf and used it without ringing!
