ive just opened my post to find someone elses credit card from halifax - the address was mine but the name was someone elses - it even has his account number on - i have phoned them and they said to send it back saying return to sender and they will make sure this doesnt happen again......there is no sign of anyone using my address - they said the name does match the account holder and our addresses are similar, only the postcode and area is different (same street and number house).............
how the hell can they do a mistake like this?
maybe i should go shopping...........(obviously a joke, but, what if i was someone who wasnt honest?)

That is shocking, you should ask them for a written explanation of how this happened? What if your credit card had gone to your neighbour instead? Would they be so lax about it?
For a large bank, it is even worse0 -
I think this is incredibly serious, someone less honest than you could have used it and caused all sorts of problems.
Also, what about the possibility that someone else has received your card??
I can't think who to report this too but I don't think halifax should be allowed to just get away with this error.

Don't you have to ring up the bank and get it activated before you can use it? I have just had a new credit card and had to answer a few security questions before I could use it. You say your addresses are similar. Isn't this the fault of Royal mail then?
edit. just reread your post. They printed your address on their letter?0 -
Something similar happened to me yeas ago but with LloydsTsb. They sent me someone elses check book but didnt know who they had sent mine to as the person who owned the cheque book i had didnt have mine. Took weeks to sort it out. Totally usless. In fact they have paid my standing order today into someone elses account but dont have a clue who has got it. Its no wonder they get called Noddys toy town bank..............0

yeah, even though the other person lives at a similar address - say, coronation street - he lives at coronation street, manchester, say bd33 rts - i live coronation street, manchester, say db35 rvg (example obviously) so, only the name of the street is the same and the town, just the postcode is different......
still, how the heck can they make this error? they told me to drop the card into my local branch, but, like someone said earlier - why should they be allowed to get away with this - so, am considering whom to report them to also......0 -
i took the card into my local store as advised and the woman wasnt even going to take my name and didnt ask how come i had the card....i told her how annoyed with the situation i was and how they shouldnt make errors like that - she then got snotty and said it might not be their error, someone could be using my address.....i asked her if they would investigate this and let me know if this was the case - they said they werent allowed to tell me if it is the case......what? that doesnt sound right? surely if someone can take something out if my name or address i have a right to know???0

I think the lesson there is dont be helpful, as it gets you nowhere. Should have asked for them to send a pre-paid envelope so you could send the card back. They clearly dont care about the fact you got someone else's card. The question is though, have they even told the customer whats happened 'You still havent received your card? Let me look in this... OMG LMAO, you wont believe this, we sent your card to someone else.. yeh I know its hilarious'

i did think of contacting him myself - i assume he is at the address where they do mix our mail up regularly - but, if anything else has gone/did go missing and a fraud occurred he may think it was me...........0

I complained to Barclays and TSB and Capital One - claiming that they contribute to FRAUD by irresponsible marketing - including our details in posted materials - allowing our details to be sold by Experian credit agency - keep an eye on your personal data and complain to the companies until they stop using your info - they are just selling debt but others are stealing your identity and the banks do not care!!0

Surely it's technically illegal to open someone else's mail, even if it's sent to your house? OK dishonest people wouldn't worry about that, but technically what you should do is write "not known at this address" on the envelope and drop it in a post box.0
