Has anyone had any experience with services that provide alerts when balances fall below a certain level?

Virtually all the big banking groups (Santander, Lloyds etc) offer to provide text messages free of charge to their personal customers when their balance reaches a certain point - including HSBC

As for your charges - see of HSBC's fair fees policy applies - if a transaction was £8, they shoudn't charge you £25 in fees.

However, you have to take responsibility for your own actions - try leaving a larger buffer in your current account or using your mobile phone to check your balance... and/or arranging an overdraft facility.

    Regards
