I emailed them and got a reply, but it took them over 2 weeks and all it said was "Please ring us to discuss". I don't have time to ring them during the week, hence the reason why I emailed them!

I've kept the account for the free fivers and online saver, but nothing else (I will not be putting my salary in, or paying bills from it)

They are there 24/7, so you can call them one evening or weekend.
  • I've got the lloyds account and think its a good account. I am however thinking of opening a first direct one to get £100 and so I can open their regular savings account which pays really good interest.
I'm retiring at 55. You can but dream.
  • Sounds like a good idea if First Direct will accept you. :)

Capital One credit card (not a debit card): their website seems to update instantly under the 'pending' transactions section. [Barclaycard do this also (and probably other CCs for that matter) but just appears to total 'pending' transactions immediately, wherease C1 gives complete and detailed breakdown of every one.]

There is no reason in principle why 'real-time' bank debit card use - at this level of detail - could not similarly be included on their websites other than 'integration' that is. Transactions with DCs and CCs use a common visa/mastercard 'acquirer' infrastructure to capture this information in the first place. That's how it gets displayed by the likes of C1.

If your bank's programmers aren't very good at their job this may be prove a 'challenge' however. Looking at online banking sites across the piece none of them appear particularly good. Banks are laggardly adopters of technology since (as I've been told) banking is a 'risk' based, rather than technology based, [STRIKE]cottage[/STRIKE] industry

  • Hi, the reason for my asking is this: my bank, "Bank of Scotland" doesn't seem to update my available balance on line as/when I make a purchase or use my card and because of that, there have been times when I've ran dangerously low on funds in my account! does anybody else have this problem? it can take a few days for transactions to show on my account whereas I expected everything to be in real-time which would probably be a whole lot easier. Can I also ask why my account has an available balance of say 457.64 and an overdraft balance of 556.64 (my overdraft is £100) and why has there been a pound missing from my account for the last 7 days? it's like it hasn't updated or something since I made a purchase online.

    John.

I am with HSBC and on the rare ocassion that I do use my debit card the available balance is updated immediately. This even happens when I use my card on line to buy lottery tickets.

Santander take approximately 3 working days to show ANYTHING outgoing.

I don't know what version of the Online banking your using, but mine updates in Real time, as soon as I spend on my card it is deducted off the available balance.

it is posted to the statement line when the company collect the money from Santander, this is standard for all banks. Maybe that is what you are referring to.

A nice thing about RBS and Natwest is they have an excellent iPhone app, and apparently they have an Android and Blackberry app available too.

How is it excellent exactly, you can't even do a bill payment on it, sure it looks fancy, but you can only view your balance, and last 6 transactions, and transfer money to yourself(provided the accounts are with rbs as well)
    Hardly revolutionary.

You can do everything on the Santander mobile banking that you can do online, except create standing orders. But it doesn't look as fancy as RBS one.
  • I have online bank account with YES BANK. I can manage my checking, savings, money market and consumer loan accounts day or night with just a few clicks. YES BANK online banking works pretty nice and looks much cleaner and modern.
  • I'm HSBC (personal and commercial), and think their service sucks - hence why I am here looking for advice from people that have used other services.

Their IB sites are awful - not intuitive at all. The business site is laid out completely differently from the personal site. Statements, SO/DD, etc are in different locations.

If I log into my Personal account on my Mac, I have to log out before I can log in to my business account. If I want to view both accounts at the same time, I have to use two different devices!!!

I am completely unable to connect my business accounts with my personal accounts. It should be perfectly acceptable for me to set up rules between my accounts that move my money around as a result of certain events.

If the balance on one of my personal accounts drops below £x then I should be able to have my business accounts push funds to it. The level of IT expertise required to achieve this should be widespread in the world of Financial Sector IT.

However, the fact that this would mean that my personal accounts would never go overdrawn, would mean the current round of charges that I am about to have to swallow would not happen. And a very nice income stream for HSBC would be lost.

    £125 across two accounts (5 x £25) as a result of debit card payments ranging from £8 - £15.

However, having been into the bank today (because their IB site was, yet again, faulty) the staff their were completely unable to tell me exactly which debits I was being charged for - which is really helpful, thanks HSBC.

On the upside for the bank tho' they would keep my accounts if they improved their IB - as it is, I now want to move all my business and personal accounts away from HSBC.

Has anyone had any experience with services that actually allow me to manage my money between my business and personal accounts, without the need to do manual transfers?

Has anyone had any experience with services that provide alerts when balances fall below a certain level?

I don't have the time to log in to all my accounts everyday, so I need some sort of high level IT services - any one know of any such thing?

    Thanks

The criteria for good online banking for me is:
ability to send messages to avoid phone calls and letters
    reliable faster payments
    open and close accounts online
    notify foreign travel online
    Good transaction history
