Unscrupulous thieves. Partner just got renewal notice though- same price as previous year, so she was about to not bother comparing with other providers. She just happened to notice the excess looked quite high - compared with the previous year and found they'd put her excess up without asking and without any mention of this in the cover letter!

She rang them up - they said were increasing excesses across the board to "deter lower value claims" - i.e., reduce their costs. Really sneaky and underhand IMO, felt a name and shame was in order.
