That's a good idea! Do you find the light weight polystyrene a problem with the balance of the pot??

No, not really, but I tend to only do this with big pots and I put use the polystyrene to fill about one half to one third of the pot depending on what plants are going in the pot. The polystyrene also helps with drainage too, which is a bonus!

Thanks! I will be potting strawberries later today.

Just read on the net that one should remove any blossoms after planting them in pots 'This will give them time to be established before expending energy towards growing fruit.' And that the next year's crop will be better.

It's a shame to remove those lovely flowers but if it means better produce we need to follow.

    What's your advice?

    Thanks!

You can deter slugs and snails from climbing your pots by wrapping copper wire around them about half way up they wont cross copper, or you can buy a copper self adhesive tape to stick on.

Or you can ask Gandalf to protect them for you!

    Sorry couldn't resist!

Back on topic. Can you use grow bags for strawberries? I've bought a couple of grow bags from Aldi for just this purpose. The bag has pictures of strawberries on, but all this talk of pots has be a little worried.

keep them off the ground they grow through the straw .Also use the egg

I'm afraid I'm greedy and can't bear to remove the flowers....I had a bumper harvest last year from about 18 plants.

You're also supposed to remove the runners so that the plant concentrates its energy, but again....I let them run and root, so this year, I have lots more strawb plants

    Thanks Keth!

Hummm I didn't see any strawberry plants in my branch of Aldi. Nevermind, I'll nip into B&Q in the week and see if they have some.
