I ended up using elbows after trying bending springs. The spring was a pain to get in and out and the pipe still kinked anyway. Probably a knack to it and I can't imagine they'd sell if they didn't work somehow, but in hindsight I'd have just forked out for a pipe bender in the first place!
There is indeed a nack to using a bending spring but nowadays, even in the best of hands, copper can kink or ripple purely down to the modern day copper specs. Its much thinner walled. I always use a bending machine and dont use springs any more. You could of course have used plastic pipe and pushfit fittings but then i guess you would have had to buy a full roll of 15mm which racks up the cost again...
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Would the old trick of filling the pipe with sand and then bending it, work nowadays?

Unfortunately not unless you are very very careful and have all the time in the world - it's far too damned thin walled.

  • A spring will be no good for 90 degree bends

    Really?

Depends on the size of the arch you want to achieve but a spring is just as good as any way of bending pipe.
