There is indeed a nack to using a bending spring but nowadays,even in the best of hands,copper can kink or ripple purely down to the modern day copper specs. Its much thinner walled. I always use a bending machine and dont use springs any more. You could of course have used plastic pipe and pushfit fittings but then i guess you would have had to buy a full roll of 15mm which racks up the cost again...

Would the old trick of filling the pipe with sand and then bending it, work nowadays?

Unfortunately not unless you are very very careful and have all the time in the world - it's far too damned thin walled.

Depends on the size of the arch you want to achieve but a spring is just as good as any way of bending pipe.
