New phone, same SIM - will this work?

Just hoping somebody can help out a wee luddite
My extremely old mobile is now on its last legs and I'm looking to buy a new one. I have a SIM only deal with Vodafone. I'm reluctant to enter into a new contract with them or anyone else as they seem to be for at least 12, but usually 24, months and I'm hoping to move abroad in the summer.
If I buy a Vodafone Pay-as-you-go phone, can I just put my SIM card into the new phone?
My current plan is £10.50 per month which includes 300 minutes, 3000 texts and 500MB data. It's more than enough for me - I only call and text at the moment. However, would this mean that, if my new phone is one of those fancy smartphones, I would be able to use the internet without incurring any extra cost?
I've tried contacting Vodafone but to no avail. So, hoping somebody here can help out. Cheers.

You can either buy a Vodaphone mobile or simply buy an unlocked sim free phone from someone such as Carphonewarehouse.
The second option will give you a greater range of handsets and also allow you to change to a different network in the future without the hassle of getting your phone unlocked.

It may also be cheaper to buy a payg phone (which requires a £10 top up) as the overall cost may be less. If you go down that route make sure the phone is unlocked or will at least work on Vodaphone.0 -
Also find phones4u.co.uk are very good for buying unlocked payg phones. Then you can use your own sim in them.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0
