If a website drops its price

Options
I recall reading - in a Money Saving newsletter I'm sure - something like if a website lowers its price on a product within 30 days of you buying it, you can claim a refund for the difference. It might specifically have been Amazon, not all websites. Is this the case, now or previously? Useful to know if buying things now with January sales in mind.

If a website increases the price within 30 days of buying the product you can pay the difference.

Seriously these have been discussed before and its non-sense
  • Yawn with the pointless "would you pay the extra" crap. It would behoove pcombo to read the frickin' URL of this website
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
  • I've not heard about that before. But my question was regarding a website LOWERING its price, not raising it. i.e. You buy something full price then it's reduced in the sale. I recall reading Amazon (I think) will refund you if it's within x days and you request it.

With Amazon you can appeal to their better nature if the price is lowered within 7 days of recieving the item - it's more hassle for them if you return the item and then re-order it at the lower price, but it's good-will and not policy.
  • According to http://rsstalker.com: "Amazon.com doesn't advertise it, but they have a 30 day price drop policy. If you bought something from them and they lower the price within 30 days, just fill out a form, select "Refund Inquiry" and they'll refund you the difference."

    That's not Amazon.co.uk though.
  • There is no legal entitlement to this. However, you are entitled to return an item for a full refund under the Distance Selling Regulations, but this only gives you 7 days and you're likely yo have to pay for return postage. You can re-order at the new price.

Amazon don't tend to do this anymore. It is a pretty old policy - as far as I am aware, the .com site will automatically process a refund, whereas the .co.uk don't really offer this - and definately not in sales.

I believe its the same in John Lewis...they will cover the difference with goodwill if the price drops within 14 days, but not if the new price was a sale price.

but what pcombo states is relevant.

if a website lowers its prices within 30 days and you want the difference refunded then if a website increased its prices within 30 days and asked you to pay them the diffence would you?
  • I didn't say I expect it, I said I recalled reading that it was offered.

Amazon dont refund difference now they haven't for a long time. You can send things back within 7 days under DSR If its not be used. They do sometimes lower price if you ask but they dont have too, they also refund difference if its on order and price changes before you get it as my daughter had this done with a box set on pre order

Amazon price fluctuate all the time due to demand
