  • your visual image of it seems to be different than mine. With mine the only way it would hit people on the pavement is if the car is there. They wouldn't be sticking 2feet out of the car sideways, but forward

I appreciate what you say, but the logistics would seem to point to the fact that anything protruding from the side window to enable longer lengths of wood to be accomodated in the car MUST be protruding at an angle and facing forward.

What made this worse in the example I quoted was because the idiot driver was carrying poster stakes for a political party with the POINTED ENDS facing forward.

  • yeah that's not the cleverest way, emergency stop and somebody in the next town becomes a walking advert.. Especially as they'd be pointing up through the window to help with the flight.

Although a few months ago I picked up a load of timber in my MR2. A lot was 6ft / 7ft lengths so i had to stack it in the passenger side with the t-bar roof off, and the wood out of the roof. I got a fair few strange looks on the way home.

    Just depends on the length.
According to the Police it is legal.
As a new user I am not allowed to post the link, but if you Google: How much overhang can I have to the front and rear of my vehicle? the first search result should be from the Police - Ask the Police area. Hope this is useful. :)
