Primus £6.49 a month - yes or no ?

Options
Having read about Primus in the MSE email recently I'm strongly considering moving to them from BT. ALL I want is cheap line rental - the only reason I have a landline is for internet access - which I use a lot. Call charges don't matter.

Can I just check:-

Will switching affect my tel number or broadband service (I pay monthly for this with ADSL24)

I've read of poor service from Primus - but am hoping this shouldn't affect me as all I want is the connection. Or am I more likely to experience a line fault that will affect my broadband - I need to avoid this as I sometimes work from home.

I read on here that Primus will charge a hidden £60 connection charge - is this correct?

Any advice will be very welcome - many thanks!

Primus = a reseller of a telephone line.

If u go with them, and state you dont want 'Caller-ID' or any other fancy rubbish, just state you want to pay £6.49 for line rental, then u will get the service for that price.....
when u get a fault, u'd report it to Primus, who would tell u if its your problem, u pay the £69 fee (everyone says that), and then they contact BT Wholesale who check out the fault...
Primus dont have engineers, still all BT from that side of things... Primus just provide the rubbish customer services and the billing part....
(I'm with them, does appear to be run by plums, but still cheaper to go with these plums! :) )

I asked similar question to PO 7 weeks ago no reply. Emailed them again around 10 days no reply. Complained to them for lack of any replies it got passed on via complaint department no reply, guess I wont be using PO either. I have to stick with BT unfortunately for now.

If you work from home and broadband is essential it's well worth making sure the line rental and the broadband supplier are one and the same, as some types of faults can result in the customer being pushed from one to the other in search of a repair. In addition a business service with SLA is well worthwhile, as if the line failed you could potentially be without broadband for days or weeks.

If it comes to needing a repair, given customer service reports on here - Primus is likely to be a disaster zone.

That said, Primus line rental should work with ADSL24.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'm definitely having second thoughts now. I'm already moving my line from BT to ADSL24s own service after BT increased prices YET AGAIN! - it starts in 2 days. This is saving me a £1 or 2 a month, but Primus would have been half price.

I think I'll stick with ADSL24 as they've been great service-wise, and I don't think it's worth risking a move to a company who seem to have non-existant support.
  • i'm thinking of switching to primus, why is this offer not on their website says something like £8 a month?

doesn't seam you can have telephone only service on plusnet

I thought it was £6.79/month but, as the MSE article explains, it's an offer available only via a third party (homephonechoices.co.uk) website.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Yes, the Line Rental Saver is £6.79/month but there aren't any inclusive calls. But the Primus Home Phone Saver at £7.99 via Homephonechoices has inclusive evening and weekend calls. The Daytime landline call rate is cheaper and the connection fee is slightly less, but careful if you call mobiles - the daytime rate is marginally less & evening and weekend rates are cheaper EXCEPT calls to "3" are more expensive all the time, as is weekend calls to Orange.
BUT, be aware, although their customer service has moved to the UK, they have been inundated since the price rises from the major Telcos and so processing applications, phone calls, etc is taking a lot longer than it might normally.

N.B With Plusnet you're not tied in for 12 months but there maybe charges if you leave Broadband before 12 months if you took a Router and/or were a new Broadband connection.
