This is why I don't use the deposit box facilities - always the counter clerk so I always get a receipt.

... or the deposit machines, which give a receipt and have less chance of error than a cashier.

I paid a cheque into my bank using a method I have used many times - popped it through the letter box, in an envelope, because I wasn't expecting to be able to go into town during bank working hours. No cheque credited. As it happened I did go into town so I went and asked. The teller I spoke to said she'd emptied the box and it wasn't there BUT she would check (lol at pun) and see if it had got stuck - she fished around with her hand (it's a huge wooden box) - lo and behold there it was. Problem solved. Your bank needs to make sure something similar hasn't happened.
Even if I had filled in a deposit slip it would have been irrelevant had the bank not stamped the slip.
