These things happen occasionally unfortunately. All you can do is contact the drawer of the cheque and get them to put a stop on it and issue you with a new one.

Ask them at which point it was 'lost'? If they have an image of it then they should put in a substitute document.

If no image - nothing they can do I'm afraid.

Surely, if they have a receipt / giro stub stamped, they have to honour it? That's something you can argue.

That's something to argue. If you can get a replacement then no big deal. Just inconvenient.

No - they can't do that as they need the Sort Code / Account number to push it through Clearing and get the funds from the drawer.

If it got past the point where an image was taken. Which is early in the process - then they have that detail and should just put in a substitute document.

  • I thought that lloyds now scans the cheque at the counter by the counter clerk putting both cheque and paying in slip through the scanner attached to their keyboard.

I meant they should be liable for the loss as a result of their mistake. If they accidentally pressed a button on their computer and lost £100 of my money for example, I expect them to give back my £100.

If a cheque is paid in and they stamped my book but they lose the cheque during the clearing process, then I'd want my money regardless of whether they can get the money from the issuing bank.

But anyway, apparently, OP doesn't have a receipt. Hopefully, they can get a replacement cheque. I thought you had to fill a giro credit slip with lloyds which gives a receipt bit you keep?

If they lose your money then yes they pay it back at their cost, but in the case of a cheque, the money isn't lost, we know that it is still in the original account sat waiting, are you suggesting the bank should stump up the money but not receive funds from the sender?

Yes. At least, if you are negatively affected because your money didn't arrive, it should put you back into your original position, perhaps by giving you an interest-free overdraft for a reasonable period until you can get the sender to give you a new cheque.
  • Given that it appears that the OP put it in the depositpoint box.......and did not hand it over at the counter desk.

    1. the OP won't have a receipt.
    2. Looking at it from the bank's point of view they only have the 'OP's word' that they put the cheque in the box in the first place.

This is why I don't use the deposit box facilities - always the counter clerk so I always get a receipt.
