    It is worth contacting the local education authority and asking about grants for uniform. Do it early though because they take a while to come through. Think it would only apply to secondary school and you probably have to be on benefits.

    Also ask if the school runs a second hand uniform shop. Ours does and it is open at new parents evening, week before school starts etc.

    Interestingly, at 'our' school boys can wear any make of smart black trousers, but if girls wear trousers they are supposed to be from the school's official supplier. Apparently boys are less likely to turn up in 'unsuitable' styles than girls when given a free hand. :D
