Washing machine - who gives longest warranty?

When I had the washing machine replaced it did take about 10 days to get it sorted, which wasn't great as we had a new born baby. My mum was on holiday so we went to her house and used her machine but John Lewis did offer us a temporary machine while it was sorted (they were negotiating with AEG in the background) but that would have been too much hassle. John Lewis then replaced the machine and gave me a 5 year guarantee. I was required to pay for the repair man's initial visit and claim it back. Admittedly you wouldn't need to do this if under warranty but is typical if you are looking to determine the cost of a repair to a household appliance. The replacement machine was worth over £600, I think I paid about £350 for the original.
Again the dishwasher I had repaired took about 10 days, the repair man came out very quickly (within a couple of days at no cost to me) but they had to order a new wiring loom so this delay would have occurred even if repaired under warranty.
I doubt I would try claiming under sale of goods act after say 4 years but for any period less, as long as I haven't abused a washing machine, I think I would have a strong argument that a washing machine was not of sufficient quality if it breaks down and would be arguing SOGA. If the retailer refuses there is nothing to stop you purchasing a new machine and making an application to the small claims court. It should be noted that even where you successfully claim retailers are entitled to make a deduction for previous use of the machine so you wouldn't necessarily get the full cost of a replacement, but similarly you can claim for non use of the machine e.g. having to use a launderette.
At the end of the day you have to make your own mind up as to the likely success and whether it is worth the hassle. I quite like the challenge.0 -

Ive got a Bosch washing machine fairly basic model as I only use 3 programs I didn't want something fancy, it gets used I would say about the equivalent of once a day. It's now about 10 years old. Broke down once, wouldn't empty, called a local engineer out at £55 call out charge, turned out to be a pin stuck in the pump that empies the water out due to my daughter having a go at sewing!
So on the whole I have been very satisfied with the machine.0 -
You will find that a lot of showrooms now are offering better warranties than if you buy off the internet.
This is down to manufacturers finally realising that they need retailers with showrooms to display the product, in order for people like yourself the chance of seeing them and choosing the right one for you.
Euronics centres have some good deals on at the moment and are giving 5 year warranties away with lots of brands, most if not all of them only come with 12 months when bought off t'internet.0 -
I think people should also take some time to search out a competent and repair service at reasonable cost so they have a fall back position in the event of a problem.0
