I occasionally forget to move the tax disk from glove compartment to screen as well...

Not sure how easy is it to forget to buy tax, insurance, MOT though as you do get reminders a few weeks before they're due (maybe it's just the odd garage who do this for MOTs?).
Why do you EVER put it in the glove compartment?

Back in the days when I bought it at a Post Office, it's a simple exercise:

    (1) Buy tax disc.
    (2) Get in car and stick it on the windscreen right away.
    (3) End of story.

Fair point, but can you be done for not displaying your current tax disk?

    YES.

    There are two offences:

    (1) not licensing your car; and
    (2) not displaying a valid tax disc.

So if I buy one on the 20th, and it's not valid until 1st of the following month...

Put it in the window anyway. I always buy mine a week or so early to avoid the queues at the post office on the first.

It's valid from the date you buy it until the expiry date printed on it.

Don't think so - say you'd declared SORN (off-road), decided to get it back on the road so bought a tax disk to cover Feb 2007 to Jan 2008 on 20th Jan 2007, it wouldn't be valid until 1st Feb 2007.

Pretty sure your tax disk cannot be valid (in strictly legal terms) for more than 12 months.

You can't buy one in advance unless the car is currently taxed.
