Property damage by postman

On Thursday last, our postman smashed the latch on our newly installed pedestrian access gate (we thought) as he opened the gate when entering and it was in his hand when he had left the property. The three gates were only installed five weeks ago at approx £1000. We believe he forced the gate open.

I made a complaint re the Royal Mail website on Friday but there has been no response as yet.

Later on Friday, I questioned the postman by saying, "you entered by opening the gate and you left holding the latch, can you offer an explanation", he said "I must have broken it, sorry". I told him a complaint had been registered.

How long should I wait for an acknowledgement and rather than let time drift by, is there any other course of action I should prepare for in case they choose to loose it.

    Come again?

Don't understand what you mean there.

As for response time, one week isn't even within the realms of reality for such a badly managed organisation. Follow up your complaint next Friday and then again once a fortnight until they respond, which will be some time in 2012.

It can't be a very good latch if it broke so quickly - what if the paper boy or a charity worker broke it? Get on to whoever installed it and get them to fix it under warranty.

    what does "(we thought)" mean
what the hells a pedestrian access gate is it a posh name for a GATE
then you mention 3 gates at £1000

a picture might help to explain what the hell your talking about
  • So let me be clear. A person visited your property and opened the gate. In doing so the latch broke off. Did he use excessive force in opening it such as kicking it open? If you didn't see him actually break it with excessive force I cant see how its his fault. You've got a faulty gate by the sounds and you are somewhat cheeky in trying to blame someone for this.

You obviously live a secluded life.

Some people have a thing called a drive.

They also have a separate path that people can walk down to the front door.

They therefore can have a gate covering the entrance to the path plus one/two gates covering the entrance to the drive.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Let me take this a stage further. I said "we thought" simply because we didn't witness it. It was a process of elimination. Confirmation came when the postman readily admitted opening the gate without using the latch ie he kicked it open.

In all the websites we have visited prior to having our gates installed, to differentiate between gates to a drive, which they refer to as drive gates, there is the description of a pedestrian gate, which is the gate used for pedestrian access. der!

The three gates totalled almost £1000

"in case they loose it" ie in case Royal Mail choose to loose my email and say it didn't arrive

and finally, the company that installed the gates will return and replace the latch.

I am not, unlike some, getting worked up over this.

    Makes much more sense...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands
